Buy shares?

Looks like they might be about to go up.

I've got a working share account and could get some asap.

so how do you go about buying shares then?

I do it on the phone with a company called Pershing Securities (based in Liverpool I think! eh eh eh!).

If it's your first trade they'll have to take lots of details from you first over the phone. After that you just call them whenever you want to buy / sell.

There's always a charge - never less than £20 in my experience and I think it was about £50 once when I sold a few grands worth once.

I'm no expert on any of it though. If anyone wants the number of Pershing, PM me.

There's places on line that do it too.

I was gonna risk buying £500 of NR Shares

just not sure about it all.....

Dont know what I could walk out with in a months time....

knowing my luck - nowt.

Ive bought in another fund last week because they were down 17% at the time, inevitable they will get back to last years price within a year.

Wish I waited for the NR crisis; as soon as national bank funded them it was a sign they would recover.

Just bought some at 301p each.

The people I used to buy say I won't get the certificate for 2-4 weeks so can't sell until then. That sounds pretty crap but I started looking at other accounts on line and just got bored.

Maybe I'll lose the lot - who knows - faint heart n'er won fair maid!

ive just signed up with http://www.sharecrazy.co.uk

Looks good that does.

I can't believe I have to wait 2-4 weeks until I can sell the shares I just bought. What a bag of ****.

it is a bag of shit mate.

I bought some on teh monday and sold on wednesday, how the hell do you think these banks make money, it aint waiting 4 days. 4 days in trading is a lifetime. I would have a word.

Hold up, hold up we just applied for a mortgage with Northern Rock which was accepted. Her in doors works for a finance company so she asked the advisers where she works if Northern Rock are still going to be stable enough to give us the money as this guy deals with them all the time. Allthough this has no bearing on this topic, his reply was they will still honour the mortgage but its unlikely they will survive on their own now and will probably get bought up by another company, as the impact of buying the shares probably isnt enough for the companies survival. I just read this thread out to her and she said they are only going up due to everybody buying them, its the demand for the shares that has put them up at the moment and if the big spenders like investment companies decided to sell tomorrow at the higher price they will crash again. Just thought i would mention that.

Who do you buy your shares through?

I use Selftrade.co.uk.

Reasonable prices and its instant trading, (providing you`re not dealing outside normal market size). You can buy one minute and sell them again straight away if you want. No waiting for paper work. And its all very easy

I`m happy enough with them :)

aye. its an easy way to make money.........i wish. :)

Good luck if you give it a go though. It can be pretty infuriating. I`ve made money and lost money but I still do it.

Just don`t invest what you can`t afford to lose and if it looks too good to be true it usually is............I`ve learnt that the hard way

They're at 207 now. :(

I bought at 301.

D'oh!

Sorry to hear that, thats shit luck bud but I did warn you all but no 1 listened :(

She says if you hang on to them and the company gets bought up then the shares could go back up as they will then be shares for the company that bought Northern Rock, although the amount of shares you bought might not be the same but will still be worth the same amount. For eg if you bought 1oo Northern Rock shares they might only equate to 40 shares with the company that buys Northern Rock but they will still have the same value. All this is due to Northern Rock investing too heavily abroad.

Unlucky :( At least you had the balls to try and call the low. Very hard thing to do

You might as well hold them now to see what happens regarding any takeover. Depends how much you invested really. IMHO

No advice intended. Do your own research etc etc. :)

northern rock has exposure to overseas all banks do...but the real issue i feel is they have extended their loan book by taking on a massive amount sub prime mortgages (ie high LTV products with self employed self cert etc)...the value of this book is uncertain because a large number of those mortgagees lied to get the mortgage and are probably 1/2% from chucking the keys in...the banks in the interbank lending game explicitly because of the USA experience now see such collaterial (uk homes with sub prime mortgages) as worthless so wont lend against them.....as always cash is king...and lack of cash flow will choke the NR to an early demise....who will buy them god knows as any buyer is taking on uncertain liabilities and will have to come up with their own cash....almost impossible given the current situation as all banks have spent the cash and borrowed heavily

Unless its a cash bid, in which case you`ll get what you`re given.....and like it!
