...yesterday. Got a letter a couple of months ago inviting me to voice my opinions for £75 and all expenses paid to the national energy conference in leicester at the ramada jarvis grand hotel.

Very s****y, food was awesome, the people on my table were cool but i'm really cheesed off at the spin the people who wrote the questions put on them.

None of them said would we rather invest in other energy sources than

nuclear power and most blatently the main question was:

"Do you think going nuclear would help decrease the levels of CO2?"

Which i had to agree with as nuclear power doesn't release CO2 as they'd stated about 40 times in the presentation all day long.

I'm cheesed off as i feel like i've just signed off our chances to ban nuclear power and we're going to end up with all power stations being replaced with nuclear so the government can reach their target of 60% C02 reduction.

I'm not a politics or news kind of person but I now see how they can get all these stupid proposals passed because effectively we all agreed nuclear would help even though we opposed it all the way through the talk.

I can see why greenpeace bowed out because they though it was biased.

I am actually going to write a letter to gordon brown about this i think and complain

I FEEL LIKE I'VE SOLD MY SOUL TO SATAN lol

Basically in 20 years time the current nuclear sites have to be decomissioned and so they want to start building them now.

Now if it were just a case of replacing them then that'd be find but giving them the go ahead gives them the right to replace EVERY power plant with a nuclear one.

And after the problems with the gas and oil suplies they say it'll make the uk self sufficient although i don't see any uranium mines in the uk do you?

Plus nuclear plants all round the uk is asking for trouble with terrorists don't you think?

They're avoiding the issue here, surely replacing the ones with have and using the next 20 years to research into alternative power supplies is better than committing our children and their childrens children to a 1000 years worth of nuclear waste?

Problem is it isn't going to make them any money it'll probably break them even and that's why they want to push for nuclear

The answer is then................

Lets get nuclear powered 300ZX's. then we would be green. probably red, purple yellow blue and covered in big blisters too. but the planet would be safe.

ok my 2p, but i'm not sure about the facts so dont shoot me

1) we have to move away from fossil fuels because they are going to run out and politically we cant be dependant on anyone else

2) at the moment renewables cant sustain the economy

so yes we need to invest heavily in renewable technology ( i fit solar collectors for a living ) but we need a stop gap - as far as i see the only stop gap is nuclear .. yes nuclear waste will last for a thousand years but it is managebale .... if we **** up the climate it wont be

alex

I Think we have 100s of years of coal here in Wales, :(

but that would mean you could hold us english to ransom

lol i doubt it...........:)

It did nt happen with the Scots Gas

I do agree but i think that we should limit the number of stations and the efficiency needs to be monitored as uranium only lasts 1-2 months then it has to be disposed of.

We already dump france's crap in our country, just how much nuclear waste is there in the uk and where is it going?

I do think we need to spend the next 20 years developing an alternative

Ok let me throw this one into the ring!

How about they spend some money on sending the nuclear waste into space. I think its been spoke about but dosent it work out more expensive or something? But hey its a fookin big empty area out there?

i think the issue is our nuclear stations are comming to the end of their life - i think these make up 20% of the national grid capaicty - the debate is "are we going to re-new them"?

as far as i am aware we cant provide 20% of our energy requirements through renewables ......on top of which

our oil reserves are running out really quickly so energy is becoming more and more expensive .- yes coal is becomming more financilally viable again but do we bugger up the climate for it??

regards,

alex

they said that about the sea too

they said that about the sea too

That was in a era that no one had any forsight though I think. :)

but we all like cheap fuel bills, nuclear power is prob one of the cheapest way of giving us cheap power

we all want things on the cheap, hence the way we do things

You're totally right, 18% of our power comes form nuclear atm. Those plants will be decomissioned in 20 years hence they have to start planning now.

Coal and gas are becoming a problem and aren't clean

BUT

in the industrial age they improved life by building everything to run on coal without thinking of the consequences and now they're talking about turning everything nuclear without knowing the long term damage it can do.

If we allow the government free access ot build as many as they want they['ll take the easy/profitable option to achieve their 60% drop in CO2 by building nuclear everywhere.

The best arguement i came up with was:

"Would you be happy having a nuclear power plant built at the bottom of your garden?"

If they ever manage to achieve cold fusion then all our prayers will be answered.

apparently none of this makes any real difference as we are going to run out of the minerals and stuff it takes tomake those wee green cuircut board thingies.....

Which allegedly.....everything that uses power runs on!!

So with no more green boards getting made....no more energy will get used up....and the co2 emmisions won't be a big deal! ;)

On a more serious note....the "stop gap" nuclear idea.....means that the problem will get forgotten about till the next time the need replaced again.

This is probably a dumb-assed question, but knowing that ozone can be created, why can't we generate enough to replenish what's missing up there or does the problem lie in getting it up there?

they probably could but knowing the human race they will get it wrong and we will all freeze to death?

I have said it before and will again. This is all the natural way of the world. We might not be helping the issue with our gas emmitting motor cars but the enevitable is going to happen even if we all stopped farting and rode about on push bikes. You only need to look at the historical big picture?

I don't see the issue with nuclear power, it's the only realistic alternative to burning fossil fuels. Sending nuclear waste into space isn't a great idea though, there is a pretty decent chance that the rocket carrying it would blow up on ascent and spread said nuclear waste across a huge area on the earth, or if it did make it, we would just have loads of nuclear waste in orbit, which would eventually get pulled back into the atmosphere anyway.

At teh present time the only viable and affordable, and dare I say it, reletivly safe form of energy supply is through nuclear power. Every other form of energy has by products of some form or the other and none of them can create enough energy to replace the nuclear power stations.

On teh other hand if you are willing to pay vastly inflated prices for your energy and your willing to burn fosil fuels, put up with the drone of a wind farm then be my guest.

But dont complain at the price of electricity. For me its a no brainer, nuclear fuel until they come up with an alternate solution.
