I have a red 1990 zed and the sun has sucked all life out of the bonnet. The rest of the panels are ok (does the heat from engine make bonnet fade worse??) and are smaller anyway so less noticable.

would love to get a full respray but can really afford it. I have got a can (standard size how ever big that is in ml) of paint in my my colour code made up as well as cans of primer and laquer and was thinking of doing it myself if the weather stays fine.

my question is how many cans of paint will i need to cover a bonnet and should i treat painting the bonnet differently from other panels because of the engine heat (extra coats, high temp / flexible laquer, etc)?

I'd sooner have a faided bonnet than spray my Z with nasty acrylic aerosol paint. Not to mention aerosol reacts more than 2k. IMHO, you're better off saving your cash, prepping the bonnet yourself and taking it to a bodyshop to get the bonnet and tops of the wings blown in.

TBH, if you prep it yourself and take it to a bodyshop, you'll not spend much more than you would purchasing 20 odd cans @ £5 a throw to do the bonnet yourself with nasty paint.

BUT, if I were you, I'd look at getting a detailer to inject some life back into the bonnet....and then keep on top of it by looking after the paintwork after!! For example....a top detailer I know, got a 968 from this...

PS....you'd need about 1/4 of a litre of paint + thinners/hardners if doing it through a gun with 2k. Aerosols are stupidly uneconomical. Suitable for wheels and small bits of trim only IMHO.

ok thanks for the tip. by the way what is a detailer exactly?

how much would it generally be for a paint shop to spray a ready rubbed down bonnet, and i guess your advising me to rub down the tops of the wings too?

Paint, well, 1/4 of a litre would be about £15 - £20 I'd imagine, then there's your hardener and thinners would be another £10 - £15 you'd need to ring round some local non-franchise body-shops for a decent price if you wanted to keep the costs down.

Most paint shops won't mix less than 1/2 litre , the thinners and hardener come 1/2 litre tins and your probably need a 1 litre of lacquer, you need approx. twice the amount of lacquer to paint, plus its handy to have extra if your not happy with the finish. Cost would be about £45. Some paint shops won't sell DIYer's 2k though.

If it was me, I'd also prime the bonnet after I'd rubbed down the old paint, just to make sure there's not reaction with the old oxidised red paint.

If can find or know of a good independent body shop, if you prep the bonnet they would charge in the region of £200 to spray the bonnet in.

That looks like a top job there - awesome IMO!

.......But is it not a 928...... ?

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

It is....it's a 928GT...quite where I got that 6th digit from!

I Don't know either, Si - slip of the keyboard perhaps........

968 = pants (and before the Porker fans slate me, read "WhatCar mag, 10/1993" they said ......"968 is agricultural compared to it's Japanese rivals [300zx, 3000gt and Supra]....)

928 = old school Porsche cool - especially GTS version. I would consider swapping my 300zx for a late model, very low mileage 928gts in black
