I need to start considering a replacement or upgrade for my 5 speed manual which can handle allot of power.

What are my options?

and how much?

Depending on how much power you want to run through it, you could get a series 3 onwards gearbox. Can take more abuse. Stronger bearings, redesigned gears and syncro rings.

That's what Mac has but the Synchro is still knackered. Someone was talking about different internals, probably Kirbz.

Some people talk about putting the 350Z box in as its a 6 speeder, but a freind who has a 350Z is on his 3rd gearbox, it's an apparent weakness.

If you are serious about this then I believe the OS Giken gear kit is a way forward. Better ratios and stronger gears and synchro.

EVERY bearing will need replacing too. And almost as important is finding the correct gearbox builder to do the job.

Ahh the old gearbox thing LOL

the cheapest way is the OS Giken gear set which is good for upto 7-800 bhp but is a normal cut box, i had a word with Rod and he can do the kit fitted in a box (box not supplied) for £3k

the next option is the PPG kit which is a dog box, no idea on what power it will hold but no dount it will be cluncky and loud but should be strong, think the last time i looked it was about £3k for the gear kit so then you need a box and it fitting so your looking at around £4k

the next your looking at the hollinger 6 speed sequancial box which is where your getting serious, the box is about £7k and you need the tomie adapter to fit it and no doubt an uprated input shaft etc so again your looking at around £9-10k once you have it.

the last option and this is where i was looking is fitting a skyline OS Giken 6 speed seq box, good for 1300 bhp and well proven, main problem is obviously its meant for a 4wd system so you need to plate up and remove the cog driving the front drive shaft but apart from that it will bolt straight up to a zed engine and you would possibly need a custom prop but price wise a new box is about £7k but you can get them second hand rebuilt for about £5k

thats pretty much it :nana2:

realistically a 5 speed stock Z manual, reconed with a good clutch will see high 400's and not slip or die quick at all.

Me and Jay ran 480ish hp and 400ft lb on a stock mid mileage box with a decent clutch with no slip and beleive it took a lot of shit with FTS. LC etc.

I doubt many Z's are truely dynod on say a mustang dyno that will show anything over 500hp, so unless you are spending a second mortgage on the z to get it ove this performance, a good manual box with a high performance clutch will be fine.

...and a lot more power than that.

Jun 300zx - 1200hp - Stock transmission.

Z1 Convertable - 1000+ rwhp - Stock transmission

and plenty of 500 and 600+ rwhp zed's in the states.....and proven 10sec and even 9 secs 1/4 mile zed's with stock transmission......and that requires a LOT of power.

The weakness in the stock Zed transmission (like many jap transmissions) is Snycros, 4th gear syncro in particular, and power is not the reason for premature synro failure.

Personally though I would go for a Borg warner T56 6-speed gearbox, which came in cars such as the Aston Martin DB7, Corvette, Camaro Z28, Dodge Viper, Monaro. Very capable and its Ratios (particulaly the ratios used in the Camaro Z28) would be an interesting setup for acceleration, mid range and top end.

It's all getting rather confusing lol.

Thanks for the help, i will have a lil dig around now i know where to start.

The os kit doesn't come with uprated syncro's does it.
