Hi guys I'm new on this site - So HELLO :-)

I've had a big list of cars all over 200+bhp and some over 300-400 so i'm a lover of power.

What sort of reliability does the Z have and what sort of MPG is it giving out??

Plus what are the common problems you all come accross so i can look out for them when buying one??

I've been struggling between buying the 300ZX / RX7 / 3000GT - what do you personally think of these other cars and the differences??

Featured Replies

I have had a big spec rx7 and i would have a 300zx every day, as for reliability it all depends but as with every high performance car you need to look after it. If you really want a rare one look for a swb tt slicktop but they are rare, if you like the sunshine go for a targa these come in 2 seater and 4.

thanks

Hello and welcome :D

Hello buddy and welcome to the nut house.

You can find the buyers guide here

Hopefully you can see it.

Good luck with the purchase.

Hello mate, I run a very high power single turbo Rx7 and a bog standard 300zxTT. I've had a couple of other Zeds, one 400bhp so can give a good comparison. If you want a car to drive fast round twisties and do track days etc then the Rx7 wins by miles, the weight distribution is perfect and it weighs half a tonne less than a Zed which makes every part of the car work better. On the other hand because its an uncompromised sports car it is loud, the ride is stiff and there is very little room in the cab. If you want a car that will drive for 500miles in comfort at very high speeds on motorways etc then the Zed wins by a long shot. I'd imagine a standard rx7 would be a lot comfier (sp?) than mine which has solid engine/diff mounts, 4inch exhaust, etc but I'd still much prefer the Zed for any long journeys. Horses for courses really, the Zed is a GT and the Rex is an uncompromised sports car. If you are looking at modding the car into a track tool then the rex makes a lot more sense. Older Rex's usually need a rebuild past 60k (£2-3k all inclusive) whereas a Zed will often need new turbos, clutch (£500),propshaft,etc between 60-100k. The Zed is more expensive to maintain in just about every area but makes up for it by being cheap to buy. If you want a decent rex you should look for a single turbo conversion already done with rebuild which are generally at least 6k, more for a good one. Cheap examples of either car as standard have a multitude of annoying things that can go wrong and sap your bank account: with rex's its the 'rats nest' that controls the twin sequential turbos and the poor cooling that can cause overheating (hence engine rebuilds at 60k), with the zed its the very hot engine bay cooking the electrics and all the rubber tubes. Both cars are a blast to drive and have more character than the 4wd 3000GT.

Royal has summed it up really

RX7 is a lighter more pure sports car (although not sure of the 1/2 tonne less weight though - UK spec RX7 weighed in at 1310kg compared to the ZX at 1580kg. My maths makes that just over 1/4 tonne ;) )

The ZX is more a GT car, so it's better suited to fast long distance touring in the same vein as a DB9 or XK8 is today.

But, in stock UK spec guise, the 300zx is surprisingly (very) slightly quicker than an equivalent UK spec RX7, but the rotary engine will drink much much more fuel. Turning to the 3000gt, it is nice car but weighs in at 1825kg with similar power to the 300zx. In stock form it does struggle against the other 2, with a 0-100mph of over 16 secs compared to 14.4 in the ZX.

My opinion - drive all 3 and make your own choice - that's what I did and I think in the end I chose wisely for my own circumstances.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Hi Paul,

Check out the Welsh section, & come to the next meet (July/Aug ) & we will take you for a spin :)

i'll go easy paul.....dont buy a 3litre 24V zed for the mpg :D...expect anything between 10-30 mpg depending on the amount of fun you're having

Welcome to the club.

I'd be lying if I said they were reliable, I've had 3 and they've all played up but remember they're 15+ years old now and most cars that age have their problems. As for mpg its a 3 Litre Twin Turbo (unless you go for an N/A) so you don't get very many.

i think that, only your insurance company could answer. insurance can vary by a long way depending on who you get quotes off. i had them ranging from £450-£1200 for the same cover. like has been said before, im sure they just pull figures out of their backside sometimes, then double it.

welcome mate ,

honestly try all 3 .......you will walk away from the 3000gt the Rx7 will make you feel like laying down for a while to get over it ..........the 300 zx will leave you smiling ....

go to a meet is the best bet and talk to the owners we are a friendly lot ..honest

That insurence quote, was it for a UK or Jap spec? You have to be carefull when getting quotes as they vary with UK and Jap spec cars, a UK spec will be cheaper and is just called a Nissan 300zx. Jap spec are known as the Fairlady, bear that in mind if you decide to get a zed and make sure your getting the right quote for the right car.

IMO don't bother mate.

Unless you can stretch to a GTR the Skyline is just not worth it. The GTS-T is slow comapred to a ZX, not as good looking and you will (probably) pay more insurance just because of the "Skyline" badge on it.

Just my opinion of course.......

What that man said :) A gts-t doesn't compare to any of the other cars you mentioned in terms of performance. I have been in a couple of monster gts-t's that were heavily modded and they were great but a standard one was Yaaaaaawwwwnnnnnn. More reliable and easier to work on than a Zed though due to the straight six. Insurance is much cheaper in a Zed than the skyline or Rx7, not deffo but I think a Zed is group 18 whereas the others are group 20. I pay much the same for my Zed as I did on my BMW 525i. The Rex is a lot more.
