Hi

I believe that one of the wastegates on my car has been stuck closed as the car is overboosting hughly. Can anyone tell me what parts I need to fix this, and what it involves. ie if I had the new parts, is it a job that any competent mechanic could do or do I need to take it to a specialist.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

have you got boost jets ????, iff yes then make sure one or two aint blocked first

Hi mate. No boost jets.

I have an Apexi AVC-R which is set to off, and so I should be getting safety boost I presume? But certainly shouldn't be getting 1.2 bar, and that would go higher if I wanted it to.

Eeeek! Get that sorted out sharpish! One of my wastegates was left unplugged by previous own unknowingly to me....result = melted piston and a ruined engine. All sorted now, but £2,000 out of pocket because of it!!!!!

Am planning to get it sorted but need to know what parts I might need or if there's any tests I can do myself to diagnose the exact problem.

Am taking the car easy currently, but its very difficult to control that right leg, so on the odd occasion, I do forget and give it some. Then I look at the boost controller and say "1.2 bar, oops, shouldn't have done that" or something very similar ;) Most of my journeys I actually manage to control it and sometimes have a max boost of about 0.1 bar. The car should safely be able to go to 1 bar, so hopefully I haven't done any damage the couple of times that its gone over it.

I have a similar problem at the moment.

It normally overboosts when I have my boost controller on even though it drove perfectly for the first 6 months after installation. I obviously do not drive with the controller on at the moment.

The funny thing is that it will overboost with the BC on, then when I turn it off I can get 16/17psi when it should be only 7psi.

I believe that my wastegates are sticking occasionally rather than being stuck in the shut position. I am hoping to get mine looked at by a specialist next week.

One thing you can do to test whether they are opening is to connect a compressor to the wastegate line and physically watch to see if it is opening.

Also, the passenger side is quite easy to see and not too hard to work on but the drivers side is an absolute ******* to get too.

I hope that helps. Mike...

Thanks for replying mate. Is it going to be the actual wastegate that needs replacing? I thought their was a wastegate actuator that controlled the opening and closing of the wastegate, and that it would be this that would need replacing?

From what I understand it is quite rare for either the actuators or the wastegates failing as they are very simple mechanic devices.

My worry is not the cost of parts as second hand units should work fine my worry is that the labour costs could be quite high and I'm not even 100% sure in my diagnosis!

Ahh the pleasures of owning a zed.

Nice Zed you've got there by the way. SWB manual TT is definitely the way to go! :D

Thanks mate.

Have you had any luck with yours yet? Found out what the problem is? Not sure when I'm going to get mine looked at. Need the car for work, so until I book some holiday off, can't really take it anywhere. Hopefully shouldn't have to leave it for more than two weeks, although hearing some of the stories on here about people waiting months and months for their Zed to be repaired, who knows!

its rare for the wategate to sit closed, if anything a cracked diaphram causing a leak at the wastegate but normally a peak drop in boost pressure is evident sometimes a spike which can be random.

you can check the operation of the wastegates in situ, however removing them may be an arse. as already said passenger side is reachable/removable

are you getting 1.2 bar imediately or does it peak to that amount? is there a slow reaction before you feel any turbo response

Hi

Am not getting 1.2 bar immediately. It rises up as normal, and the highest it has gone before I took my foot off the pedal was about 1.25 bar. Not really sure if there is a slow reaction. Possibly but don't really know! Really need to take it to someone who knows. Gotta save a bit of money first, as I am guessing it isn't going to be cheap. :(

You souldnt get saftey boost with controller turned off you should get factory actuactor boost pressure .Have you checked pipes to actuactors and boost controler ,one may be split this can cause overboosting.

personally there is no slow spooling when it overboosts, but the I believe the wastegate is only stuck shut when it gets hot. I have been running a profec bspec2 and it is only after I have been running with it on (and for a while after I have turned it completely off) that it has been overboosting.

I know it is not the EBC itself because it still happens for a period after switching it off. All the hoses are in good condition and the solenoid has been swopped for a known good one.

Please help me out if I am wrong but I think the only things left to check are the actuators and the wastegates?

Mine is going to be looked at by Martyn in about a weeks time...
