Whats the problem with the standard Auto Z box. Is it under spec'd for the power the car is developing . Are all high power autos as unreliable.

I have had 2 Auto Z's

A UK 91 Spec which was rebuilt once(2001). When it went second time I converted to Manual no problems since.(2002) still going

And a low mileage SWB TT hardtop auto.

First box blew at approx 50 K due to filter disintegrating and clogging (2003)

Full rebuild

Rebuilt box went at 60K due to oil leak from front gasket (2004)

Rebuild under guarantee gasket should have been changed at rebuild

2007 aproaching 70K box is slipping in third, being beaten by celicas, probably on its last legs.

While I like the auto Z I think its time to move on as I cant keep pumping money into rebuilds. 5 in 6 years is rediculous

Any comments?

buy a manual???

Mine's been faultless from day one, silky smooth and changes perfectly, my last one was a little harsh from 1st to 2nd but apart from that it was alright.

I'm moving to a manual with my new car and i was suprised how much power was lost through the box, its much more direct

Macca had a fast road auto box (probably from SE). Speak to him cos I'm sure that was bullet proof.

had both problems you describe was running stock too...went manual in the end

I reckon zeds need a brand new auto box not recon's...IIRC you can get new auto boxes off courtesy nissan in Texas....MAC1 runs an auto at very high power not sure what he done to make it run so well...others on here may know

The first one you mention would be because it doesn't have a seperate cooler. The auto box is stronger than the manual box, its just that with a manual you pay £500 to get a clutch fitted at 60k ish, whereas the auto you pay £1200 when it dies at a similar or bit higher milage. I just dislike autos for the driving experience (or lack of it).

I don't believe many people go faster in a manual, as its not easy to do a proper 0-60 launch and the majority of people would either bog down, miss a gear etc etc. My rex will do 0-60 in 3.5secs (recorded), but the chances of me getting that are 1-10 at the very best as its so hard to do smoothly. I wasted a new corvette recently off the lights with a really nice launch, he then completely annihilated me several times in a row because I bogged down or missed gears, and he was on his mobile phone at the time!

JDMs need to have a larger autobox oil cooler when they're over here. i had this done and my autobox still went (lost first two gears) so converted to manwell. no problems since then. the autobox is probably the most common weakness of the car. just good enough for stock power but any tweaks and youre pushing your luck.

Most of these autoboxes are now 15yr+ old. Maintenance will be a contributing factor too.

Imports also require a Autobox cooler to be fitted to improve reliability which the UK model has as standard.

Manuals are definatly quicker that auto's, no matter what it says on paper for a 0-100mph time. The difference on the road is very noticable.

The manual box is a lot stronger than the autobox, but thats common in all makes.

mac's is a manual ;) (it used to have a fastroad autobox, which speedfreak now has)

I could be wrong but I thought that the UK spec cars did come with either a larger oil cooler or a seperate one. It was just the JDM's that didn't have a seperate one.

I thought yours was Mac's old one, I know Its got Macs name written on the side of it ! and it used to be in Baggins car before it was in Marcus's.

well baggins had it made as a prototype that he was going to sell, i pestered him about it as i needed a new box and he sold it to me and fitted it, then my hg went and in exchange for the work he had the box back which was replaced with a std one.

Then I heard it had gone into marcus's and then when PJ had my car in for the work to be done he told me marcus was breaking it and did i want the gearbox so i said yeah and in it went.

afaik - mac had nowt to do with it !! lol
