well after having my new Z in the air and having a good prod about there is some bad rust on the rear passenger sill... so whats my best course of action? am i best to just wire brush it out and waxoil under seal it? or will it still spread?

Featured Replies

it will spead best bet is to remove any loose metal which is damaged and get a plate made up and welded, once it speads it needs treating, waxoil and the like is a prevetative for future cancer spreading rust.

ok cheers fella.... i fooking hate rust!

its not so bad now as almost 0 salt on the roads, but i would certainly sort out before the next winter, worth nipping in the bud, before it speads :)

Get a grinder on it and cut it completely out or it'll spread.

thats a dangerous statement! take a grinder to your 300

100% right though

Is it surface rust or bubbling under the paint? if its the latter the rust will have come through from the inside and what you see will be the tip of the iceberg. I'm in the process of doing my sills at the moment and found that the inner panels of the rear and front sections of sills were fooked far worse than the outer panel.

If you just weld up the outer panel it will look fine for a while but will eventually corroded through again plus the strength of the sills will be affected. better cutting it all out and replacing the metal

what sort of money am i looking at?

ill probably take it to a specialist and get the whole underside sorted as i want her to be in A1 condition

I'm never sure if a garage will cut it right out or just knock it back and weld plate over... then in 2-3 years it's back worse than before.

Rust killed my 200SX. Both sills rusted right through and effectively wrote it off.

Hard to put a cost on it until you start to do the job and see whats involved.

theres been a couple of threads lately on corrosion and a few comments about costing £200 to get a rear sill fixed. To be honest I think that is a bit on the low side considering the work involved to do the job properly if the inner panels are shot as well, theres a lot of fabrication work needed and that takes time. If your really lucky you may only need an outer sill and the section painted so may get away with £200. I wasnt lucky and recon if I were to put it into a specialist i'd be nearer the £2000 mark.........thats if you can get one to do the job most of the body shops I spoke to werent interested when they found out the age of the car, all they want to do is accident damage repairs to new motors

Yep exactly or even worse just fibre glass it, which is what happened to me after asking a body shop to weld a plate over it to tide me over until i could get the job done properly....... now doing it myself to make sure its done

I agree. I went to a few places with my 200SX which had rust in both sills and no-one quoted much less than £1000.

i dont think its all that bad.. the car is solid everywhere else so i think it will be a simple fix... ill have a look over the weekend

Get it inspected properly now..you may find its actually rusting from the inside out (in which case what you can actually see is far from the worse of it :(), very common.

TBH mate when mine was like that, I took it to a metalwork shop instead, reason being is they have better gear for cutting it out properly and owt need making up they can easily do it, also their welding tends to be better than yer average bodyshop. There are actually 4 panels there, starting from the outside and all are are easily available, 3 of them cost around 30-45 each from MJP as pattern parts, the 4th main one which bolts under the rear suspension is expensive at 160 quid from nissan, but if needed, your best buying as it is a lot bigger than yer think and has nuts welded onto it and addedd strengthers in it.

cheers
