I've been contemplating getting the r33/34 gtr brembo caliper setup.

I spoke to someone who owns his own tuning/engine building company the other night and he told me not to bother.

He said that the 300zx brakes are what the 200sx etc owners upgrade to and are not that bad. 4 pots already.

He told me to try going for some better pads, discs and lines with a fluid change.

My brakes at the moment feel like crap and i'm going to need to change them relatively soon. Almost feels like I have to stand on the brakes to get them to stop the car, which is one of the reasons i'm not driving my car as I should be at the moment.

What are peoples opinions on this?

Chris

a good set of pads make a big difference, but those same pads with the R33 setup are even better :)

I put new discs and pads on my old Z, standard size and it was an improvement.

This one I have now happened to come with R34 brakes all round. They look cool and certainly work very well!!!!! but your prob looking at £800.

Depends on how much money you have really!!

The Zeds brakes in standard form are "ok". , although many (and like yours by the sounds of it) are not operating fully. Sticking pistons is a common problem.

However as for wether its worth upgrading to the Bigger GTR setup...Yes, there is a big improvement....realisticly its the Brake setup Nissan should have fitted as standard on the Z32.

on the other hand, you have to also consider that the reason the GTR setup is readily available is that the GTR owners are always upgrading to bigger and better brakes themselves.

The GTR setup is a great upgrade for the road - a good cost effective improvement, there are better upgrades out there, better suited to track use but they are a lot more expensive...all depends on your needs.

imo you probably will notice a big difference in your stopping power with a fluid change and pad/disc upgrade if its that bad, but it all depends on what you want from it... if you want sumthing with minimal fade for track use then the brembos are right up your street (lol, u see what i did there? :wack: ). if your not 1 for looning around like a madman then its maybe not a necessity.

also, dont forget the 200sx is quite a bit lighter than the zed :)

He's correct, although it is the 200sx S13 owners, basically a light hot hatch of the late 80's. The 200sx S14 owners already have the same brakes as us and again the car is a bit lighter than ours.

Beeter pads and discs with lines and a fluid change can make a world of difference to the existing set up assuming all calipers are working correctly, the brembo's will seroiusly stop you though :)

Also is it only really worth going for the front setup if I was to go for it? Would the fronts cater for around 70% of the braking and the rears not do a great deal?

Can't afford the full £850 for front and rear which seems to be the current asking price on most of the kits.

Yep fronts would make a significant impact mate and yer right rear braking does not account for a great deal.

Im roughly looking at the same set up as previously when iv been driving hard and braking hard iv had terrible brake fade and it comes to the point were the car doesint even stop

Would going for the skyline brakes up front be a good step or would i be better off going for the rears aswell?

As above really Fas, fronts will make a vast improvement for yer.

Chris, the person who did that ebay Ad has still gotta be at school and i mean primary school where they use texts as well

Sorry i can't answer yer question fully, all i can say is, GTR Brembos fly straight on the Zed with no probs and no brackets required etc, from an unknown car or different, it would be a case of make up as you go along :)

id say, you get a better balance of breaking with the rears upgraded also, but for the everyday street driver it probably wouldnt be very noticeable. depends what u can afford but pound for pound its prolly not worth it for street use :)

If I was to buy brembo calipers off ebay for another car not a skyline, how much would it roughly cost to get some brackets made up and are brackets all I need?

They seem to go cheaper on ebay than the £450 mark that everyone seems to want for some gtr brembos.

I upgraded all 4. I did however put the fronts on to start with and then a few weeks later put the rears on. All I can say is that the car seems a little more stable under heavy high speed braking.

The callipers only cost me £300 but they came without bolts which are different to the ones on the Z and cost £50.

I also put on new disks and pads which was another £450 so all in all it was £800 fo the whole lot.

I will say that there is a marked improvement in the braking performance of the car.

As for putting different brembo callipers on I'm sure it is possible but what a hassle having to have brakets etc made up. At least the brembos off the R33 are a straight swap, all you need to do is remove or modify the back plate.

J the Gun fitted mine along with the assistance of wozzer so you might want to speak to them about it.

I have installed Smithy's Big Brake Kit which includes rear and larger front discs and a bracket so the stock calipers can be used on the larger discs. I found this to be a vast improvement on the stock brakes without breaking the bank.

Might be worth giving smithy a shout.

I rebuilt the calipers, fitted new discs, pads, stainless steel braided lines and fluid and it did help the braking, but as has already been said the Zed is very heavy so ultimately needs a bigger set up to improve the braking. There was someone on here who fitted Evo Brembos with a bit of modification.

stock zed discs 280mm - gtr discs 328 mm.......... yeah deffo not worth it
