Had an AP clutch fitted by Middlehurst recently. Loads better than the old stock one (i.e. doesn't catch fire when doing fast starts!). The pedal is surprisingly light but, as expected, it has a very on/off feel to it.

One thing I'm not happy with is I get a lot of judder when trying to do fast take offs. Is this normal for this type of clutch or have I (a) got a duff one or (b) had it badly fitted? (Timmy, try and refrain a little from what you're about to say about Middlehurst!!!!!)

Cheers

Mike

Did you brake it in correctly and did they skim the flywheel before intsall - both can result in clutch judder !

Is it a paddle clutch?

Impossible to do a smooth start or smooth gearchanges beteen 1-2, 2-3rd.

I just fitted and AP paddle clutch using the old coverplate so still as light as std, but can take 350+ bhp, which is about 120 bhp more than the std one running on it's abs limit.

With a stronger coverplate I'm sure it'd take more.

They didn't skim the fly wheel, no. And the judder was there from day one. It's slightly noticeable when setting off slowly as well, which is how I noticed it straight away.

Hi Jezz!!

Just how bad is a paddle clutch compared to stock. i.e. stuck in a traffic jam on Monday morning??

Mike, what type of clutch is it? Full disc or paddle/puck type? Sprung cushioned or not?? Also, do you have an AP part number for it??

Many thanks for your help guys!!!

Hey guys

I fitted a HKS tripple plate clutch with lightened and balnced flywheel to my skyline and it judders like fu** and has done from day one.

Dunk - Dont bother getting one if its a traffic car. i find myself holding the revs up to pull it through traffic.

I noticed it gets more of a judder when it gets really hot like after a PTO.

Well if you havent seen the balls up XOTICAR made on my Flywheel. Here it is

flywheel_1.jpg

And this did cause my clutch to judder. So that is definately a cause if it comes out looking like this.

Dunk,

You kinda get used to it, and is only a real problem in 1st, but the slower you let the clutch out the worse it is, I find if you slip it to get moving them let it out quick it's not too bad, and second can be done reasonably smoothly after a bit of practice, the rest of the gears are okay as there is momentum there. If you do it like you would a clutchless gearhchange by matching the revs you hardly feel it, but that only works on a few changes. smile.gif

Thing it requires you to concentrate, which is a bit crap in traffic, easy to forget.

First few gearchanges in the morning are always a bit sketchy. biggrin.gif

But apart from that its great, I'm more than happy to put up with the judder as the positivity of it is nice and reassuring to drive, looking forward to getting it down the pod for a proper go with it.

Jezz.

get a sprung hub paddle clutch it is much nicer to drive than a plain paddle clutch. I had one in my last car and it felt like stock

Paul

Thanks for all info everyone!! smile.gif biggrin.gif

Looks like a sprung paddle clutch when I replace mine then.

Warren, or anyone for that matter, do you know the correct depth the step needs to be when I machine the flywheel??

Regards

Robert.
