Well i picked up my zed 2 days ago and its been running fine.

Tonight I was coming home from work and heard a clunking noise coming from the passenger front wheel. It slowed down and speed up when I slowed down/sped up.

Anyway, it got quite bad after about 1 mile and it sounded like i had a flat tyre so I pulled over into a farm lane/dirt track and as I came to a halt I heard a clang and something fell off my car...

Looked along the track and found a piece of metal with a load of nuts and bolts all over the floor.

Inspection of the front passenger wheel I noticed that my Nismo LM 2-piece split rim alloys had almost come apart and nearly all but 3 bolts & nuts were left in the wheel around the outer edge. There must have been around 30 that had come out. The metal that had come off the car was the plate that goes behind the rim and the bolt goes through this and the nut tightens upto it.

I'm going to take the wheel off tomorrow and have a look at it but i've definately lost a couple of these plates as they are in sections along the road.

These are the wheels in question...

Does anyone know where I can get some more plates to go around the back/inside of the wheel or where I can send the wheel to get it all repaired and fully working again. It looks easy enough to do (just bolting it up again) but I need the plates that sit behind it.

I'm located in the West Midlands near Wolverhampton.

I'd happily take some pics of the plates I mean if someone wants confirmation of what they look like.

It could have been quite dangerous. Had to be taken home on a low loader as my spare wheel was flat as a pancake.

Hope someone can help.

HOLY fook!!! never ever heard of that happening.

Yes mate, i've got a sneeky suspicion (sp) that some fooking numpty has slackened them off out of spite as my car is parked on a road in the day when i'm at work and there can be some dodgy people walk passed.

bloody hell you must have some enemies then because if you were doing any sort of speed it could have killed you.!! get a camera up they are as cheap as chips and worth the effort!

Bejesus mate, dont think i've ever heard of that happening before!!!, bet yourglad you stopped when you did, Can't say i know where to get the replacement parts from, but i'm sure some one on here will.

Yea, made me think if I had been going down the motorway at 80+ or something as people do and all the nuts/bolts would have fell out. Could have been nasty. It's a good job I didn't carry on.

One thing I did notice after I pulled up on the dirt track and tried to edge the car forward a bit was that the wheel at come apart slightly and was catching/dragging on the caliper. Hope there is no damage to that. I'll have a good check tomorrow but i'm fairly confident it's just the wheel.

Anyone know how to get the parts or where would sort this wheel out for me?

Anyone know how to get the parts or where would sort this wheel out for me?

contact funkysi. he had his wheels refurbed buy a guy who specialised in splitrims he should beable to get spare parts being a restorer. worth a shot.

am i not right in thinking that this car was purchased from zedcentre?? or at least that those pics are taken outside of zcentre?? (please correct me if im wrong)

And didnt you pay quite a bit of money for this car? If i were you i would get intouch with whoever sold it to you, and either ask where the wheels were from or ask for some money back....

Zedworld you mean? No was not purchased from there. Was purchased from a small local garage. I'll give them a bell tomorrow and see what they say. Just means i'm without a car at the moment tho.

possibly. Im sure i saw this car for sale one ebay the other day. very very nice looking car by the way. but if you have just bought it from a garage then surely you have some sort of warranty?? i would tell them that your seriously pi$$ed and that you would like them to sort it out. Because as you said, if the wheel had broken when you were doing 80+ (on a private road ofcourse) you could have been seriously hurt and they would probably have been liable

Right, got the wheel off today and its not as bad as i thought.

I have managed to find 2 plates on the side of the road when I broke down last night that came out the wheel. I thought 4 was needed but now i've got the wheel off it only needs the 2 so no more parts are required. I just have to bolt the split rims back up now and torque them up.

The new problem is a judder from the steering wheel at higher speeds. Lower speeds it doesnt really happen. It's not the discs/brakes as it doesn't happen when I brake, only when accelerating.

The steering wheel seems to judder from left to right and the car pulls to the left slightly.

I've had the tracking checked out and the garage got the lazers on it and said it was within tolerance by a mile and is pretty much spot on.

I've managed to borrow 2 std 300zx wheels with tyres from a local guy to me. I've inflated them to 32psi as they were as low as 20psi. The wheels look in alright condition but apparently they are his drift wheels and are usually used for the back.

DO you think the judder could be from these wheels? i.e - not balanced, buckled slightly?

Until i've built up the split rim again I won't be able to tell whether it happens with my original wheels back on again but I will be aiming to do this shortly.

What else could it be? Wheel bearing on the front passenger wheel?

Any other ideas?

Cheers for the help so far.

80% sure it will be down to balancing. if not a buckle in the wheel .

get it to a tyre place to just spin them up. if they are drift tyres they probably wont be anything special. if they are realy cheap tyres they could be out of balance eg molded worng. first things first rebalance.

what i would like to know is how 30 odd bolts would come undone at the same time!! 1 yes but 30 :headvswal

  • Author

I know mate, I reckon some ****er slackened them off out of spite. Can't see a couple coming loose and that working the rest of the bolts off.

Anyway, i'm nearly there. Balancing is my first point of call but they are not my wheels so don't wanna get too involved with them.

Will build up my wheels and then try them with them on again and report back.

Just out of interest, as you probably know i'm very new to the zed scene and never had one of these cars before or know a great deal about them (trying to learn as much as possible).... Where do I top of the washer fluid lol?

I've looked in the engine compartment and can't see it anywhere. I follow the pipes from the jets but they seem to go down under the alarm.

Is it mounted in the wing or something and do you have to remove the arch liner to fill it up?

Pics would be great to show me where it is. I've checked the oil and coolant and all seems fine with the car with regards to levels. It's just my washer fluid light is on on my dash.

Chris

Exactly the same thing nearly happened to a mate of mine the other day, if he hadn't of stopped at a garage for them to inspect the clunking it would of been curtains for him and his car..............oh and it was a Lambo Murcielago!!!

bit more of an update, the judder im getting doesnt appear to occur when going around corners. Only in a straight line and shakes the whole car when doing 70mph.

I've also noticed a catching/clicking sound coming from the passenger front wheel where the problem occured with the old alloy. This catching only happens when the car is turning and happens worse when turning right but still happens quieter when turning left. It sounds like metal on metal catching.

Any ideas?

Hmm judder could either be wheels not tight enough, wheel balancing/bickled wheel or the propshaft bearing. Can we have a pic of the passenger inner wing area? Some cars seem to fill up their washer fluid here. Some SWB's only have the one washer bottle. Open the boot. Look on top of the passenger light in the corner and it's on there. Let me know if you fiind it.

Ivan

Lower steering uj is common to go rack end this can cause wheel vibration.

Very sinister sombody undoing bolts there not easy to undo, believe me just refurbed my own wheels.

Perhaps they have been refurbed recently & they did nt locktite the nuts (superglue )

maybe should check rest, dont want to freak you out, but better safe than sorry !

**** me the irony! Wouldn't be the first time a car has driven out of shedworld and the wheels have fallen off

  • Author

Yea, i'm tightening them all tight now.

What should I look out for when taking the wheel off to see what is making the catching sound?

Here is a picture I took earlier. If anyone can draw some arrows on to what to look out for...to see if anything is bent or would cause some catching/clicking when turning the steering wheel?

Cheers guys, found the washer fluid topup. Would never have thought to look at the boot area.

Anyway... i've assembled the wheel again and fitted them and i've still got a judder which seems to kick in only when i'm accelerating and happens around 70+mph. When i'm pottering around about the town at around 30mph you can't notice it.

I'm thinking it is the wheel balancing as the wheel was nearly hanging off when the bolts shot out the split rim.

I've lock tight(ed) the bolts & nuts up so all is good that end apart from I have had to use some std bolts which don't match the others that are in and the alloy needs a refurb now really.

Hope it's just the wheel balancing as I can't really see anything bent in the arch area.

Any other ideas?
