Nearly T Boned some old deer on Friday as my brakes were asleep and cold.

Time to address this now me thinks.

I've got DBA drilled and grooved Discs with Portafield Carbon Kevlar pads, Standard hoses, No idea how old the brake fluid is, Rears are drilled and grooved discs with portafield pads also.

Will draining the brake fluid and upgrading it help?

Seems a shame to dump the pads and discs as they are new!

Is there anything that can be done to the servo?

Fresh/upgraded fluid and braided hoses will make quite a difference, so I'm told :)

Get new brake fluid in there.

Spose to change every 2 years or so many miles.

To test servo, have engine off, pump pedal till it goes solid, keep your foot pushed down, then start the engine. The brake pedal should go down, indicating the servo is working.

Is there much pedal movement? you may also have a sticky pistion, trapped air.

Did you clean the discs before you put them on, normally they are covered in a oily substance to stop rusting! that wont help pads.

Did you bed them in properly too?? makes a huge difference. You want to heat cycle them.

The standard brakes are 'ok' when in tip top condition. Suggest you remove the front calipers and check for sticky pistons, resolve if ness. and then install the new braided pipes and flush through with clean fluid.

You're never going to get (and keep) enough heat into race pads to make them work effectively on normal roads. Checking your calipers / pistons, new brake fluid and braided hoses are all good ideas in any case but neither these nor upgrading a servo will address the fundamental issue that race pads are less-than-ideal for roads.

Are my Portafield ones Race ones then?

try different pads, I found porterfield ones aren't the best from cold

LD (Spearmint Rhino ? :p ) put EBC Redstuff pads on with the grooved brembo blanks - seems to be a nice combination, as they still work well from cold, but will stand up to a bit of 'fast road' or light track use.

They also come with a special surface for bedding in from new - which means you don't have to go scaring other drives with rapid braking manouvers - although that is recommended to make sure the discs you have are not going to warp on you when you get them a bit warm.

Change pads and fluid would be my recommendation. DOT4 or DOT5 would be ok - but as someone else has said, make sure the pistons are not stuck / sticking - although you would tend to feel that.

Brembo disc's with Hawk pad's.......good from cold and as Silverbullet will tell you he can now stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

..or

R33 GTR brembo's from the Skyline........ :D

No mate they are not, they are street ones, race ones are special order only.

If your stiill on old fluid, when flushed and re filled correctly will make a difference as will braided lines if you still have stock.

The thing with brakes is, some pads suit some discs better than others, your combination is fine bud.

Finally with this subject, someone says his brakes are naff, but someone else driving that car thinks they are great compared to what they are used too, different perceptions on whats good an disn't ;)

cheers

how much did your brembos set you back wozzer and whered u get em from?

from http://www.abbeymotorsport.com it's a skyline place down in surrey....

for all 4 corner's plus disc's and pad's i paid £800........

...

hawk hps pads :hyper: bite real well even from cold, low fade little brake dust, but there isent a lot wrong with porterfields i should imagine you have a seized calliper piston or 2? maybe!

Apologies but when I googled these pads, the first ref I found said

Porterfield Racing Pads

Since 1986 Porterfield Enterprises has earned a reputation for manufacturing quality competition brake pads and brake products to the performance racing industry. A close working relationship with leading professional motorsport teams has led to the development of the one of the finest racing brake pads ever produced.

So I checked again and found the main Porterfield site http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/about.html which says the same thing BUT also says

Including our complete line of Carbon Kevlar racing brake pads, Porterfield’s is a leading distributor of the world’s finest manufacturers of competition friction giving you over five (5) street compounds and 15 racing compounds to choose from.

Sorry - I hadn't read far enough down to the "street compound" bit. But you can see why I made the race assumption oops my bad :nelson:

deffinatly go for hawk pads and brembos, i personally wouldnt go for cross drilled or grooved discs, althogh they take alot of heat out they hav'nt got as greater "stopping" serfice as solid discs have. combined with a set fo braided lines coming out of 33's and a good fluid, u will notice a consideradle difference HTH

No problemo bud, least yer seen the blurb on em ;)

Wozzer is that 800 bucks for Zed standard sized discs with pads ?

Even 3G who use Brembo blanks as their base disc before maching to their own spec cost just £400 for all 4 and with a set of front and rear pads of varying brands costing around £150 (F+R) it adds up to a lot less money which would pay for new lines and fluid and fitting......

cheers

smithy

he paid 800 for skyline gtr brembo calipers discs and pads all round! bargain!

Ah gotcha, thanks for clearing that up mate, see Gio even i misunderstand too, :p

smithy

i am personally a great lover of ferodo ds brake pads, the ones for the 300zx are fds986

Agree 100% - wouldn't use any other pads :)

Yep The Ferodo DS2500 for the Skyline Bermbo's are the DB's. Also for Skyline or standard 300ZX disc and calipers the Mintex 1155 compound are almost Identical to the Ferodo DS pads in feel, lack of dust and stopping power.
