The headlights on my import are pretty dim (a bit like me).

What options are available for having them brighter?

I don't want anything too ambitious like a complete headlight change

can you get more powerful bulbs or something equally simple?

HID kit. Plug n play

Danny at DTA can advise/supply I think.

£235 quid!!!!!!!! Sorry chaps, way out of my price range. Any cheaper alternatives?

Dave

Danny can get high powered conventional halogen bulbs, but you'll never get the light quality and brightness unless you get HIDs.

I didn't want to spend the money at first, but it's something than needs to be done. Both my dipped beam bulbs have blown anyway, so an HID is going to be fitted now. :)

What about these 'xenon upgrade bulbs H1' from ebay. Has anyone tried them and are they any good? (they're cheap so are they useless?)

Edit - Sorry Alan, didn't see your post before posting this one as I was searching Ebay - perhaps I'll give them a try if they are an improvement on the standards. - Dave

The uprated bulbs will make a small difference but by the time you've replaced them a few times you're half way towards a HID kit which will completely transform your vision and should never need replacing.

HIDS are like driving with your main beam on, in fact you probably won't even need main beam after as HIDS are soooo much clearer and bright white.

I thought aftermarkert HID conversions were no longer legal due to the headlight lenses of normal lights weren't designed for such high power and couldn't control the footprint of the beam?

Fitting PIAA bulbs makes a difference (out of date pics here http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/bulbs.htm ). Cleaning your headlights (I haven't done mine yet oops) is also good and should be done if you want to get the full benefit of any new bulbs HID or otherwise. http://www.aus300zx.com/tech/headlight_disassembly/headlight_disassembly.htm

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Dave, as stated here on almost all these replies, HID's.

Don't do anything bud, I'm about to PM you something ;)

Thanks for your pm, Dave, I have replied.

So far as HID's are concerned I agree everyone is telling me they are the answer to my poor lighting, but they seem to require a lot of work to fit, requiring brackets and wiring and things which is a bit offputting for me.

I've also read an article about cleaning the lights themselves and the time given is a minimum of three hours PER LIGHT.

I was hoping I could just change the bulbs for some more powerful ones but it appears I am wrong (that's not unusual). I will have to give these HID's some serious thought but they do sound a bit daunting.

Cheers - Dave

Fitting HID's really is a POP! Take H3 out, fit HID bulb in same place, plug wire from bulb into HID box, plug wire from HID box into existing loom plug. Locate HID box in sensible place..... Job done!

Yeah, cleaning the headlamp units is a little involved, but straight forward, and I say that as almost one of the first jobs I ever did to Eliza (so i didn't know all that much back then) The most long-winded part of it is taking the lens off, where you have to heat up the mastic and prise it apart. But nothing a hair dryer cant handle :D

Well.........it doesn't sound too difficult if you say it like that. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and do it! I'll give it a little more thought over the week-end and then decide.

I want to thank all you guys for the advice you have given, I think it's steered me in the right direction.

Has it shown you the way?

Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Can you see where we're coming from?

Are you no longer in the dark over this?

OK, I'll get mi coat................................ ;)

Fitting the H3 is dead easy, its when you want to show off and fit the H1 too!!!

By the way, it can, and has, been done!!

Fitting the HID lit to an NA is even easier than a TT as access to the lights is easier.

There is room in the engine bay near the light to put the "black box".

But if you have a cone type airfilter then you can do a nice "stealth install" and locate the black boxes either side of the cone filter.

If you dont want to do it yourself then I will do it for you. FOC.

Only problem is the distance.

Many thanks Pete for your generous offer but I must do it for myself, if only to prove that I can.

BUT, if you want to offer a FOC 60k service including cam belt and other belts I might be tempted though, lol

The headlamp glass covers do git a film of debris on them. If you remove the headlamps.. which is a total pain in the ass and clean them, you will get an improvement.

I rememember driving down a dark country road for the first time in my zed i was terrified, could not see a thing. Got out and i was amazed the headlamps were on. I brought a cheap..er HID kit from ebay-australia for £180, it was so unreliable i took it out.

Hi - Thanks for your input. What do you mean by 'unreliable'? I am about to decide on buying an HID kit and it would be helpful to know any pitfalls.

Paul.

That's a new input, Paul. What are the costs and benefits?
