I've recently purchased a 95 TT 2/2 Auto from Japan.

 

The acceleration from what I've read isn't as earth shattering as it potentially could be...

 

Is there anything that can be done to change the gear ratio's and as such improve acceleration from 0-62?

 

Without dropping names, Mclaren have done it with the podgy 500 SL, in the shape of the SLR, so I'm assuming something similar can be done to a Zed Auto?

 

Anyone out there done this?

define 'earth shattering' I have a Jspec 2+2 auto and it still gets to 60 in around 5 seconds.

do a search on n/a diff. You can change the rear diff (n/a) or new internals to give more low down power and drop top speed to about 145/150 i think. Which on our roads shouldnt be a problem !

Earth Shattering = sub 5 seconds....Evo territory.... might be difficult with 2 wheel drive car but......

IIRC the times quoted in mags guides are mostly wrong as they used non turbo cars @7secs....for TT's knock 2 secs off that :dance:

lighten the underdrive pulley, air filter and decats and you'll be talking about the 5ish seconds to sixty, smithy's grounding kits worked a treat on mine as well

Have the car checked over first. You would not believe the amount of z32's that are running in safety mode or just overly rich, affecting performance without owners realising.

 

The Auto does feel more sluggish than the manual which is livlier, but still in the high 5sec territory in stock form.

 

Under 5secs is typical with basic mods - Induction, Exhaust, Chip and 1bar boost.

 

The NA diff gear ratio improves acceleration, sacrificing top speed and fuel economy on motorway....but I would recomend a check over and boost upgrade first.

HKS did something called an ALC (AUTOMATIC LINE CONTROLLER) they did 2 versions, IF (big IF) you can get one go for ver2, what it Basically does is alter the line pressure (hydraulic pressure) in the auto box to give you a more sharper crisper gear change.

But i wouldn't recommend fitting one without doing a gearbox oil cooler upgrade first cos you will cook your gearbox.

I think that earth shattering acceleration has a lot to do with the fact both the McLaren costs more than twice the price of an average house and has more than twice the power as a standard Z.

It would probably be worth your while doing the autobox oil cooler upgrade before any other mods as (apparently) the Jspec boxes can go bang quite quickly when used on UK roads

and dont think you're going to lose a lot off that with a 2wd car.

best thing for acceleration is going to be moulded slicks then chip, filter, exhaust.

wouldnt really bother with shorter ratio's on the auto as when you start to mess with it all you'll get is wheelspin.

and DO the 'box cooler mod.

As 150/160/170+ mph is about as much use as a condom machine in the vattican, I prefer getting to 70mph ish... :-) faster, whilst sacrifising top end speed... Did this on an old Fiesta XR2 and changed the front and rear sprokets on my motor bike lessening the teeth by 2 on each...this gave epic acceleration but lowered top end.

0-60 on a stock auto is still around 5.6 seconds so it is still way quicker than most things, however the 300zx is a superb overtaking car. OK people have spoke about 50-150mph, but in all honesty for 40-90mph a-road overtaking a ZX really comes into its own.

 

Being a realatively heavy car with rwd and no traction control, most modifications will not take 0-60 much below 5 but your 0-100/standing quarter mile times can be improved quite a bit. The increased power/torque has more effect from (say) 50-100 than 0-60.

firstly let me say that the sl500 wasnt turned into a SLR lol thats BullS**t, its a totally different engine and g/box, my Z is brill at 50-100 nothin is better for the price and if u want a car that is quicker 0-60 u are goin for the wrong car to start with

How about buying a McLaren SLR and putting the engine and box in your Z? ;)

I only mentioned the SLR as an example... GeeWizz... talk about getting beaten up a bit... I only wanted to know if anyone had improved on the acceletation of an auto Zed... Maybe a Lauch control system would do the trick...anyone know of one for the mighty Zed?

my zed (in my sig) was chipped, monngoose exhaust, grounding kit, apexi filter and boost jets after that i was hitting 0-60 in 5.0 seconds, i had a decat to go but i didnt get there. i think a few people have got under 5.0 seconds though

my old zed started off as an auto and to be honest i wasnt that impressed with first gear as it seemed to take a bit to get going.........but once moving it was a whole new ball game so to speak :bow: i have somewhere the nissan brochure for the 300zx and they state the 0-60 time of only being 7.2secs on the auto TT, with the manual being 5.6secs, although mine did not seem that slow :confused: the 300zx is quite a big lump to be moving so there are other cars that are quicker 0-60 but as mentioned 40-175mph it REALLY comes into its own :dance:

 

i did an auto to manual conversion which for me made alot of difference in the kind of pullaways you could get, they seemed faster. but at speed it wasnt as fast as the auto (although IMO more fun).

 

FIRST THING do the auto oil cooler!!! mine as an auto went bang on more than one occassion and as such im still paying for it on my credit card :headvswal

 

all being said the auto TT IMO is still an awesome piece of kit, that made me smile and alot of other car drivers hang their head in shame as i "flew" past them!!! :tongue:

i think the auto gets quoted at 7-odd secs because of the way they launch it. they must just wait for the go then press the pedal. if you dont mind abusing it a bit (which will make the oil cooler mod and regular fluid changes a must) i think you can get fairly close to the manual.

on stopwatch timing (so not really accurate but an idea) i was getting 5.5's in the manual and 6.0's in the auto.

Tecknique can make a big difference, if you build the power up against the brakes, ie left foot hard on brakes and give it some gas, not too much or it will light the rear tyres, and then go it will be far faster. Also, on mine full throttle is not quite as good as two thirds for the first 20 feet or so.

 

A fast road upgrade will help the box change gear better too. Def do the cooler.

when you do this the 'box oil is working REALLY hard and will get really hot. it just kills the oil off a fair ammount quicker but it does make it launch better.

i also found that i got better times by starting in normal mode (against the handbrake(!) and a little footbrake just to hold it) and 3/4ing the pedal for the 1st half of 1st gear (no wheelspin) then flooring it and it automatically swaps to power mode.

i was getting 0.3 response time at santa pod in mine, left foot hard on the brake, bring the revs up to just under 2k then second amber light from the bottom floor it and you'll get about 6/6.5 0-60 in a stock car, i'm modded mine since then so interested to see how i do when i go back in march
