have been in engineering since leaving college after studying engineering for 3 years in 2000.

I'm good at my job but am bored and fedup with all the bullshit involved.

i have been with 3 engineering based companies since and have been at my current one for nearly 4 years. the thing is its a small company and there are no promotion opportunities as the next job is owner of the company and i don't think my boss will like that lol.

tbh the pay isn't that great and without a future I'm at a loss as to what to do.

really considering a change of career which is both varied , with the opportunity for promotion and pays well. anybody have some serious ideas please.

what is a rewarding and interesting career for me to look into

anything considered BTW I'm 24 now so going back to uni etc isn't really an option due to the financial commitments involved which i just cannot support.

thanks

:) Hi mate.I was in the same situation about a year back.I decided to go for an I.T course, which i am about halfway through now.Best move career-wise i ever did.It seems to be opening up new doors now.BTW,i used to feel like you do on sunday eves, not anymore though.Just an idea for ya bud. :)

Hmmm, I work in IT and I feel like that right now - engineering sounds fun. So does painting the grass the other side of the fence ;)

im lucky, i work as a plujmber, but also work as a "property maintinence engineer lol"

basically i do the day to day running of bedsits, workshops, shops and flats, i get a hoooooge variation of work from building to rent collection to eviction and renting then also do plumbing in between

the money aint great (about £10 an hour) but its not just a one trick pony job, so if you want some variation in your work i can highly recomend it

Lucky you, you're only 24. Bail out of engineering asap, specially if it's manufacturing based, so much easier to get stuff made overseas cheaper and better. Not really got any any advice for you, I'm an engineer to trade and get better money driving a white van, it's mind numbingly boring.

Any idea's as what you wanna do??

I've could prob put you in touch with someone if you fancy running a pub, take about 2 years to get your own unit, moneys not grate to start with but, you start as an assistant then get premoted to deputy then next step in in house releif ( you run the pub your assistant/deputy while manager is away on holiday) next step is external relief (you run a pub in your area while that manager is away) then holding relief ( run a pub somewhere for anything up to 6 month while they find a suitable manager, then on to your own unit. Perc's are you get a free flat above the pub normally 3 bed. 6 weeks paid holiday and your saliaried, so you could do 5 hours or 105 hours, get paid the same.

If you want any more info pm me.

almost 20 years in engineering untill i was sick of shift work and working for a company that treats you like dirt.

So walked from it and now I teach it instead, best thing i ever did,

The fact that you are considering a career change is proof enough that your present job has run its course and you should go.

onwards and upwards.. good luck

nearly 8 years as an aircraft engineer and i really dont mind my job, the work is interesting and different every day... but i lose my job every couple of years mainly coz of terrorism, but also coz of the overseas market. the money is good as a contractor rather than a permie but it involves travelling alot... single mans job... which is bad as i lose my job on the 22nd december and become a connie in january!! the mrs can further improve her relationship with the milkman and the postie ;)

overall advice, dont join aviation if u like to be settled!

What sort of engineering are you doing? Maybe a change of tack in the same profession could help.

Manufacturing in this country aint quite as bad as people make out. I'm a process control engineer and have so much work its unreal. Lots of companysare still interested in the UK and setup buisiness here but granted they are more food/pharm/power companys.

im between careers at the moment. been in retail for eleven years  and im now trying to get into software development (graduated with BSc Soft. Eng. in 1999 but been enjoying my then current job so much I stayed in the wrong career). It was the toughest (and at the same time, easiest) decision I had to make, but I made it. The trouble i have is that I dont have the commercial experience that is required to get a job :( so im doing a VB .NET course at the moment (finding it too easy for words seeing as i have my degree) which i hope will encourage employers to consider me.
