took the headlights out for cleaning and spraying of the plastic insert and was wondering if its ok to leave off the rear inboard bolts as they are a pita to get too and three other fastenings on the bottom of the light should hold it fine?

I did....one was missing on mine and I dropped the other one and it landed somewhere and rolled down inside the front cross member. Lights are pretty solid still.

Has to be the very worst design for headlights. Absolutely ridiculous mount points. Quite why Nissan didn't have a bolt going down from the top to secure....guess that would have been too easy for them.

That fantastic idea should be put in the Museum of crap design, along with stainless steel tea-pots and plastic forks.

And wipers that swipe twice when you only flick them on.

use a hacksaw to cut a slot in the bottom of the bolt, you can then use a screwdriver to undo it from the top ;)

I find that the worst part of it, is actually locating the bolt and getting the thread to bite. So a screwdriver from the top wouldn't help.

Slight hijacking of thread, sorry - hope no-one minds........ how did you split the headlamp to get the insert out - and how did you put it back together again?? Have seen mention of this quite a few times, but not really sure what it involves. I was thinking of plasticote primer and chrome to spray inserts, is that what you used?

One of a long list of things to get sorted out but as I've got a HID kit I figure doing the inserts will give even better night vision!!! Cheers Steve

i used a heat gun ( the type you use for paint stripping) and a wide blade screwdriver to seperate the seal, you only need a few passes of the gun to get it hot enough to allow you to split the unit, i heated the glass and the sealant ( the glass holds its heat keeping the sealent soft) and I also used chrome paint on the inserts the one on the right of the picture is painted the one on the left is not.

Again ... slight hijack of this thread ... so apologies up front.

Splitting the headlights and giving them a good clean up is absolutely recommended, whether you're installing HIDs or not. However, painting the inserts silver/chrome or chrome plating them is only good for aestetic enhancement - don't be fooled into believing that this will enhance the light output one bit. The light from the bulbs is either refracted (dip beam) or reflected (high beam) by the lens and reflector respectively. Emitted light should not be reflected by the silver/chrome insert as this will cause scatter and disrupt the beam pattern.

Hijack over ... ;)
