Just been to SANTA POD

hey everyone, i've just got back from my first santa pod experience. would have been quality if it wernt so damn cold. or if i had a car to race with.

there were probably more zx's there than any other group of cars , about 5 0r 6 i think, a load of 200sx's and a couple of skyline's

evo's were the quickest cars, although a R33 skyline ran 12.5

the zx's seemed a bit slow, kept running in the 15's region - i think basically all the 4*4 cars were the best.

GT4's were all good, every time running high 13's, there was one pulsar gtir and that was pretty good 13.31!!

i think the best ZX was a black one, with number plate ??? SGT i think, that was real quick, i think it ran a 13.3 with a 2.05 reaction time!!

there were a few Yabuza's though, crazy crazy bikers!! they ran a couple of 9.8 143mph times.

some crazy bastard pulled a wheelie near the finish line at 135mph!

there was also a toyota corollla that ran a 13.09 - i think it might have been a fensport prepared model

but yeah, i think basically the 4 wheel drives cars have got a serious edge on the traction side. the celica were consistently faster than the zeds.

i couldnt stay long though, it was a bit nippier than i expected, i think i should have brought a sweater instead of my shades.

sorry i had no batteries for the camera. god damn santa pod, in the middle of nowhere.

ben.

Yeah i was at santa pod aswell!! Those zx's look they were racing banana tread tyres on ice-no traction baby!!! although respect to that guy who was tryin to spin the tyres on the line!!!He ran 13 seconder with a real slow reaction time. Those 200sx seemed pretty slowish with a best somewhere around 14.5ish.Though respect has to go to the bikers on busas there crazy!!Yeah 4*4 seems like a real advantage on that slippy track as the gt-4's were constantly good, maybe your 3000 gto will kick ass veilside ,we will see ,we will see.....R

Santa Pod is a bitch, my standard auto Zed was spinning the rears half way up the track after getting a good standing starting!

When are you getting your GTO Ben?

Trev

er, should have it 2 weeks today i think.

did you go today trev? or was that another day your on about?actually, no, you wernt were you.

Nope didnt go today - stuck in work watchin the london marathon out the window!

Trev

well, you could've got your sneakers on and, er, joined in!!

I hear the traction at Santa Pod isnt that good to start with. You need it warm and very dry before RWD can show its potential.

I may go later on in the year

yeah, it seemed to take all the RWD cars ages to get going - especially the zeds.

that quick one i was on about, reg no. *** SGT - that started off like a slug did the 60 ft in what seem ed like 3 seconds or something stupid, then it shot off like a rocket and did a 13.3.

i think the guy got a bolloking off the officials as well, he tried to sit on the line and spin up his rear wheels, i think he might have had an auto or something, and clearly this must be a no no, the offial guy told him to do one.

Srrae,

Excuses excusese tongue.gif

Ill be going with you if you go tho...let me know! Not that ill be doing anything interesting out there though.

I am currently looking for a zx to buy as i thought they were probably one of the fastest cars on the street. i am somewhat let down when i hear they were the slowest on the track for the day! surely this is out of character!!! please tell me this is so! as i have set my mind on these cars and am about to purchase one this week! if not then perhaps i should look elsewhere!

steve

Umm, dont worry about the speed, must genuinely be a terrible track, cos from my 'limited' experience, zx tt are plenty fast enough...

maybe the drivers need to improve?? wink.gif hehehe

Have you driven one yet? if not drive one and see what you think, i thought driving a car before buying one was the first thing anyone did before ???

Anyways, tyre wrinkling power and good acceleration are plenty good enough...but at least drive one first eh?

Ciao

edit: fastest car on the street depends on how wrecklessly you want to drive smile.gif

but im sure you'll have no problems! wink.gif

Don't be so quick to judge the Z on a drag race event. The Z was never built for 1/4mile sprints and weighs in on the heavy weight side aswell.

The Aston Martin Vanquish only runs a 13.5 1/4mile and I'm sure I wouldn't want to run against one of them with it's monsterous torque curve and in gear flexability. I also wouldn't say no to one based on its 1/4mile time. A 13sec 1/4 is fast and even faster on the open road!!

Z's are generally reasonable when stock and with some mild tuning would surprise most things on the open road.

I'm sure most here who have owned various high performance cars can reasure you that a Z is a great buy all round.

no,!!! they were far from the slowest!!

jesus!!! i mean, they just wernt living up to their potential as they couldnt get the traction as well as the 4*4 could

basically i was saying, cars like the celica GT4 were performing way bettter than expected because of the traction they could get.

the zeds were still one of the quickest cars, its just a shame they cant get the instant traction of a 4x4

only cars like the skylines, evo;s were always quicker. then it was just down to individual skill,/ effort as to who would win out of GT4, Zx, Sx, cosworth, etc.

and clearly the zed is capable of wooping ass . - note the black one that did a 13.3 with a slow start to boot.

Also people insist on gauging how good a car is from its 1/4 mile times, ok so if you live in the states maybe thats all you live for, the mighty 10 second car! hehehe, but people fail to quote in gear acceleration et al. Same with the people who just quote 0-60 and top speed of cars, its rather pointless as surely all fast car production should have stopped with the mclaren f1, unless anyone can make faster cars??

edit: dont get me wrong im sure 1/4 mile runs are much fun and a nice indcator of your cars potential and stuff, as are proper track days, but a fast 1/4 isnt the be all and end all.

edited again: please insert smile.gif wink.gif tongue.gif etc where necessary hehe

I ran a 13.5 last week at the pod and traction wasn't that good. I had one other run in the 13's and the other three at very low 14's.

I beat a modified Supra twice, it all depends on a numer of factors. Z's are one of the quickest cars around. A Ferrari 355 had a best run of 13.2 last week, and only a few cars got in to the 12's.

i have driven a few over the last week, an auto and a few manuals. Sure, they are damn quick. I obviously got the wrong end of the stick earlier, but it did read as though they were slow! which doesnt seem right when i look at the performance figures. When i said "fastest on the street" i merely meant that is was up there in terms of one of the fast production cars. looking forward to getting one this week, viewing another tomorrow, sounds hopeful as well.

cheers

STEVE

It wasn't just the Zeds struggling today.

I was there in my soop , and it was like driving in the rain !!........or on glass...but err I have no idea what thats like, so stick with the rain analogy confused.gif

That surface favours AWD or superhot sticky drag tyres.......I was spinning the rears practically all the way wriggling and squirming like a wriggly squirmy worm thing ...

That Fensport Corolla was the bomb! I honestly thought it was a stock motor just looking at it!!......... Its got a built 3sgte lump knockin out about 360bhp.

The guy said he was disappointed.... he was lookin for a 12.99

'scuse the ramblings .......too many toots confused.gif

hey, er, 'blow me' , er, yeah, which supra you were runnin?

and that fensport corolla was the daddy. it ran a 13.09 while i was watching. damn fool , he cant of been that dissapointed.

yeah, you, see, its those damn 4x4's were winning all the races, - although it is funny watching you and the zed's spin on the line for about 5seconds and then usually still win the race anyway.

ps. has nobody got any pictures or video to post or anything. we need some of those quality video productions again with robbie or kylie soundtracks!

cheers, ben

Erm no the fastest 200sx time was 13.2 smile.gif

You can have as much torque and BHP as you want, but if the wheels dont stick on the floor its all wasted. Cars such as skyline transfer power from the rear to the front when the rears start to spin.

RWD once they start to spin, they will just keep spinning untill you let off and apply the power back gentally.

Stuart

yeah big respect to that 200sx guy who ran 13.2, it was that grey/silver one wasnt it?

he beat his mat anyway [15 ish ?]

gotta say, all those black new shape 200sx's looked pretty mean.

and do you always get crazy loonies on yabooooza''s doin 143mph with their sweaters on?

The silver one.....

Yup, I was pretty disappointed with the times of Z's and SX's. Nearly all were in the high 14s or more and I know that some of the SXs are quicker than that, Ive seen them run before and I hope that the Zs are normally quicker than that.

At least it didnt rain tho. smile.gif

well despite havong to get up at 6am on the morn, im gonna persist and watch the grand prix i missed today.....

shit.......ive just missed the highlights of qualifying again, arse.

.......ah sod it, im goin to bed, god damn shumacher.

nice supe by the way, there were actually a few decent 3 spoke alloys around aswell!

right, bed time, and im gonna dream of sitting in that famous santa pod queue, of dudes and there rides waiting for the green light,

actually, i noticed that some people seemed to gun it when all four yellows came on, and some waited that split second longer for the green to flash??

and also, occasionly when the propper draggers were racing - the four yellow lights went on one by one instead of just flashing on like they dd for all the other guys.?

anyway, i definately look forward to future santa pods - hopefully ill have a ride to compete in soon...............

god damn michael schumacher......god damn tiger woods,

uuuuughhhhhhhh.....santa pod........ahhhhhh ..kelly brook.....er, yeah, anyway....

Don't get the 3 spoke thing confused.gif

actually, i noticed that some people seemed to gun it when all four yellows came on, and some waited that split second longer for the green to flash??

If you go before green ...you've blown it !! This is indicated by the lack of the reaction time on the time board ...

and also, occasionly when the propper draggers were racing - the four yellow lights went on one by one instead of just flashing on like they dd for all the other guys.?

I think the flashing yellows are to speed up us RWYB'ers..... the proper dragsters get the countdown

Was a good ol' day was it not. smile.gif

Managed a shit 14.63, prev best 14.49, must work out how to do this start thing. 10 mph bouncing off rev limiter making my tyres lighter isn't the way to do it is it! LOL biggrin.gif

Big respect to Barry Caleini (spelling) for his super 13.21 S13 run! Think he'll do a 12, his car is a bit special. There are 4 or 5 350+ BHP S13's that should be down the pod this summer, some one will crack the 12 barrier.

Does appear that 4X4 is the way to go, traction is everything, so who would like to sell me a good quality R33 GTR V-spec for about £3K smile.gif Anyone. smile.gif

Reaction time isn't counted in the 1/4 time, the time is from when you cross the line. So you can cross the finish second and still get a faster 1/4 time.

26th May, is prolly the next big one for the 200 boys, so you lot coming then? smile.gif

Jezz.
