hi all

my car has picked up ap strange habit, when i start it from cold its fine, i will get to the bottom of my road about half a mile (driving v steady and on no boost at all) , where there are some traffic lights if i stop at them my car then starts to smoke vast amounts of blue smoke, if i then pick up the revs to about 2-3k it will stop but come back as soon as it drops back to idle.

after 5 minutes or so when the car is warm it stops all together, and drives perfect no smoke and boost is fine and it pulls like a train, the car is a uk tt manual. with 66k on the clock

pcv have been changed some time ago

BUT NOW

I checked the pcvs again and the passenger side was as clean as a whistle just like it was when i put it in.

However the drivers side was full of fresh oil, so i have cleaned it out and the car has run for 2 days and nearly 100 miles perfectly no smoke as above at all.

so my question is this WHY :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal

and how is the oil getting into one but not the other?

any ideas i am comletely confused and still have a niggle its the turbo seals.

cheers all

Mate, if you've cleaned out the PCV and it has stopped the smoking it can't be turbo seal. You know how I said I had a similar problem, & everyone I had spoken to had said "turbo seal". Well I dropped my exhaust to examine the turbo's on Friday, & to my delight they where clean as a whistle with no shaft play at all. Next thing to do for me is replace PCV system (but I suspect worn valve stem seal to be the culprit).

Just keep an eye on it, enjoy your Zed. If problem persists, visit your local Zed guru ;)

If your PCVs were previously shot, then you may have a lot of oil still in the inlet tracts. Takes time for it to all to its way out. So it may still keep doing odd things for a while.

so my question is this WHY

and how is the oil getting into one but not the other?

This is because the PCV system on the Zed is a not a very good design:

The pickup for both valves is taken from the LH exhaust-side rocker cover and as this not the highest point of the engine, oil can get sucked up resulting in smoke and a plenum full of oil.

For the LH PCV valve the air/oil has to travel a longer way to get to it and that's probably also the PCV valve that's still very clean on your car.

To improve the PCV system, you can add an oil catch can or create a better/higher pickup for the PCV valves, like has been done here (but requires plenum removal):

original pickups have been blocked off:

new pickup has been made in the tower of the intake rocker covers:

and hoses have been routed under the plenum to the PCV valves:

Hey lymon, did you find those pics on aus300zx.com? That's Andrew's engine pictured above. Very good idea, I'd love to do the same but I'm going to stick to the factory layout (only because I need the Zed back on the road ASAP)
