a little while after having the car de-catted it started to smoke, which i am told could be the pcv valves or the seals on the turbos. the question is , if i have something put back ie; cherry's, or some other inline boxes, will it stop the smoking or is it too late now?

Sorry to hear that mate... if it's the PCV valves they're easy enough to clean/replace apparently however if it's the Turbo Seals then they were probably on there way out and the Decat reduced the back pressure enough to let them leak a little. If you put the cats back in it may increase the Back pressure enough to stop them leaking but at the end of the day you will need the Turbos replacing (think that's right but I reckon that one of the Gurus will explain better than me)... Sorry mate.

thanks for the info, the thing is the car still goes well when i put my foot down and it doesn't seem to smoke. it only smokes on tickover at lights etc. then you are unlucky if you are behind me in a convertible!!

Sounds like the seals but I'm not an expert... when the turbos spin up they seal temporarily I believe due to the forces involved but then when you come off boost and slow/stop the seals will leak again..... :headvswal. Mines decatted but I haven't had smoke...... Yet.

Sounds more like the seals seeing as its after you decatted it. Normally its more likely to be the pcv valves if its only at idle. You may be lucky though? Its quite easy to test the PCV valves: just run the engine with the tube off of the valve and put your finger to it. If they are working it will create a vacuum and suck on your finger (oh-err).

good luck to you mate i wish i'd never done it now cos if it is the seals i am going to break the car or sell ,as is ,i can't afford to spend any more serious money on the car.offers anyone? it's in the cars for sale section.

Sorry to hear this mate but it will most certainly be turbo seals. Lots of people put up threads asking should they decat and the answer unless your putting new turbos on the car at the same time should be NO.

thanks glenn i wish i'd known before but it looks like i will have to sell it as it is or break it now. so if anyone wants to make an offer, feel free.

I,ve just come back from Midland Turbo.s in Nottingham , got a quote to have a pair reconditioned for a jap auto tt.

£175 each plus vat   sounds a good price

I've been running with slightly leaky rear seals for a couple of years with no ill effects. Mine only smokes when the car's been running on boost and then is sat idling for 4-5 minutes. If you can live with it, don't worry about it :D

bloody hell thats cheap! is that new wheels or just seals and bearings?

any guarantee?

I gather it,s new seals bearing,s and balanced and all cleaned up, but when you consider there were d.i.y overhauling kits on ebay for £75 each and you still had to have them balanced, i think its a cracking price and should be guarenteed

Also asked about de-catting problems ( getting premature seal wear )he says as long as the tubs are new or re-con there should be no probs cos it won,t be running with any back pressure from the off

whos going to take out your tubs then?

That's bang on from my experience. It only seems you have the problems when you decat 15 or so year old tubs, because of their age and the extra pressure that they fook up IMHO

Gonna swap them myself and most likely call on Manta v8 for help , it,s handy having a mate who.s a mechanic
