Had a lovely little envelope come through my door this morning with a £100 fine for driving in a bus lane on a Saturday afternoon. It comes with a groovy little picture of my car, and the hideous violation I was committing!

Thing is, I was not driving in the bus lane, but two of my wheels touched the white line as I passed a car that was turning right and had its arse stuck a bit into my lane.

Anyone know if I will get let off if I contest it?

course you'll get off with it as you "were forced to swerve to avoid a collision with a car which suddenly stopped without indicating" - no way in a million years they'll go to court with that one.

I thought you could enter a bus lane if the car in front of you was blocking your lane when turning right?

Cheers guy's. Yup, I'm gonna contest it. No way was I driving in the lane, just brushed it as evidenced by the photo.

Yeah Rich666, I had to swerve something terrible to avoid that collision! :D

Hi Mark! Pleased to report that the car is still running BEAUTIFULLY after Martin came round to finish off the cam-belt replacement. Can't believe that it started on the fist turn of the key after sitting in the garden for TWO YEARS! I'm surprised the fuel is still Ok, but maybe that's down to the quality of the Optimax I last filled up with (or low compression turbo engines?) Anyway, it's great! :hyper:

Had any teething problems?

BTW, I though bus lanes were open lanes on Sundays and bank holidays. Noticed you're in London though, so I'm guessing that rule DOES NOT apply there.

No, it's a 24/7 bus lane on a major local traffic route near Northolt in West London. You can be stuck in a 5 mile traffic jam at 04:00 in the morning there, with a bus using its own deserted lane every 30 minutes to 1 hour!!! Bit like the bloody ridiculous one on the M4 MOTORWAY just a few miles down the road.

There should be a number to call on the letter with the photo. Call them. I think they can have a look at the photo, but do contest it. mistakes.

is this near the target roundabout?

if it is i always do those manouvres there i live in harrow, i go through there a lot...

What's annoying is the high number of people are effectively forced to pay up due to lack of time, knowledge and support. The government and councils make it easily to pay the fine and a real pain to contest it.

I watched an old dear in London try to exit a petrol station and get into the 2nd lane, but a van came down the road rather quickly, so she hit the brakes and ended up in the bus lane and held by traffic lights, if there was a bus lane camera, or a bus with a camera she would have been nabbed, whereas a traffic warden from say 10 years ago would have seen that she was forced to stop in the bus lane by the speeding van.

Pleased it's all sorted, get it filled up with fresh petrol ASAP though :)

I agree entirely, however, people argue that black is white with a TW or police officer and won't accept they were in the wrong so camera's appear the only way forward...

Definately contest it mate. Afterall the photo does not actually show you driving in the bus lane!

The authorities just hope you will be intimidated by "photo evidence" and just pay more hard earned cash into their coffers.

Tell them you will WILL go to court if necessary - if you are in the AA or RAC you can get free legal representation so the court case will cost them a lot more than they will get from you by way of the fine!

Good luck mate.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
