If I'd accepted every offer of a guaranteed $1 Million, cheap loan and guaranteed penis extension then I could afford the petrol to attend every Northern meeting but actually wouldn't need to leave my house to get there.

I really don't want to set up a new email address but having had my current one for 4 or 5 years, it seems that every twat out there has got it and writes to me. Daily. No, make that hourly.

I would really appreciate any suggestions of ways to filter out spam ?

Thanks

Dave

Same here mate. Can't read my proper emails for all the crap that I get sent.

And don't believe a word those penis extension emails tell you. I've been walking around for a year now with the ten kilogram weight they supply attached to the tip of my penis. My penis is no bigger than before but I've now got a foreskin to rival an elephants trunk!

Depends on what sort of e-mail adress you've got.

If it's a work e-mail (i.e. on that you're not responsible for maintaining, take it up with your postmaster. S/he will be able to filter most e-mail). If they claim otherwise they are talking crap (various services they can buy into and filters they can apply) and enough people pestering them will change their mind.

If it's an e-mail address on a domain you own, some clients (e.g. Outlook) have junk e-mail filters (in Outlook, go to 'organise', then 'junk mail'). I must admit I've never needed to use this but I've heard from other people that they can be quite effective. A tip I picked up from a fellow contractor is to give out different addresses to different people, so you can see who is distributing your address. For instance, when I shop on-line at Tesco I use tesco@shadow-people.com. This wont stop junk mail but it gives you some idea who to get mad at (it is normally illegal to pass on other people's addresses without their permission).

If you use a free web mail service (e.g. Hotmail) the online filter is very good. I typically get 20+ junk mail messages a day; all but about one or two get filtered. It puts them into a folder called 'junk mail', where you can still check for messages that are not junk. Check your service for this feature; most have them.

Finally (imho) NEVER follow the link on junk mail that says you want to be removed from a mailing list; you probably wont be removed and it just confirms your address. Also (again, imho) ALWAYS make sure you select the 'don't send me marketing gumph' and 'don't distribute my details' options correctly. They are frequently worded obscurely to confuse people.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info James.

Nico, I'm on Freeserve, picking up through Outlook Express (XP version).

Dave

also, if you are still "lucky" enough to use a modem, then after downloading mail, disconnect before you read it.

then, if you have any mail in html format, image links wont get hit, confirming that you have opened the mail...

the image links are normally unique identifiers for this reason...

unfortunately, this is a self perpetuating problem if you use an online email account...

Dave,

If you using outlook the Rules Wizard is a very powerfull tool for this kinda thing.

You can choose to Autmatically take mails From certain people or mails with certain heading or headings and bodies contained certain words and put them in a seperate folder or delete them straight away

The interface is quiet nice just go into Tools - > Rules Wizard on the main menu bar - And you can add rules and make rules etc from the dialogues with a bit of trial and error !
