Hi All

I need your help. I keep loosing the back end of my car when there is the slightest sign on moisture on the road.

Yeah I know what you are thinking, ‘drive slower’ or ‘stop putting your foot down too quickly’ but trust me it’s not like that at all.

I was warned before buying the car that they aren’t got in the wet, and therefore ‘I’m driving Miss Daisy’ in the rain, but surely there has to be a better tyre I can buy which will help.

I currently have Avon in all four corners.

Can someone recommend a good tyre – various price ranges would be appreciated.

Thanks

Spencer

before you change your tyres check for any play/ wobble in the rear wheels as it could your hicas arms or even shock/springs that need replacing

My car's back end comes out a lot in the rain with the slightest touch of power. lol. So I make sure I drive careful in the wet.

My car came with Snow tyres lol. (Probably because they were cheap to buy) I will replace them soon though. Well, I might keep them for a track day or something!

I did enquiry price of tyres and an average tyre (Hancook) is about £80 each!

So a top quality tyre would probably be between £100 - £150 each!

IMHO, your just asking for trouble putting shite tyres on... even on a standard car - if you can't afford the tyres, hold off on the modding until you can!

I got some Falken 451 245\45 16 ZR-Y tyres two weeks ago for £75 each. I went for the 451's as they are supposed to be better in the wet. And they seem better too. Now rather than the front wheels just totaly loosing grip in the wet they do it a later with some warning.

Have you checked your tyre pressures? I had the same problem and found they were about 5 PSI too high- took the air out and it was like a new set of tyres!

are they Jap tires? get yourself some decent UK tires (toyo, falken, goodyear, bridgestone etc) and you'll be fine

Jaffa you missed BF Goodridge I am running over 500bhp without the aid of traction control! These tyres ROCK IMHO

:( whoops I haven't checked them since I bought it a few months ago, but it has been serviced so I'm guessing they checked it then. Maybe not though.

Does anybody know the standard pressure, oh wait there I think I remember seeing a sticker on the door opening, or am I thinking of another car. Oh well I will have a look tonight.

Thanks

Na they were bought in the UK. What do you have on? Oh and how much. Lets face it though I would rather pay a high price for a tyre rather that risk going off in the wet.

I've had Eagle F1s in the past and, as far as I can tell, the Falken 451s I have now are just as good (and quite a bit cheaper). I've had BF Goodrich in the past, too, and as Mac says they are good (if somewhat uncommon).

Falken have changed the tread pattern and spec of the FK range, The best IMO for our cars are FK452 which grip superbly in the wet..

I had a new set fitted and it chucked it down, drove in the wet almost the same as the dry, awesome. Just dont get stuck behind a car with em on because the spray they throw is massive ! :D

they are the best ones i have had. Had toyo proxes but the way i drive they lasted 2 months!!

It's a pitty that they don't come in the standard rimsize for our cars, those FK452

Bridgestone is a 100% Japanese founded company, its good to see that they have moved on so far from the 70s and 80s, when all new Japanese motorbikes came with them, and the very first thing you done was to rip them off and replace them with Pirelli or Metzeler before you died!

They lasted something like 50,000miles, but had no grip and were lethal in the wet. They had a square profile, as the Japs hadn’t released that us Brits like to crank bikes over round bends

But like all motor sport things Japanese they have learnt well and are now up there with the best in the world!

I agree, the new 452's are mighty impressive, and at a good price too.

what size are your tyres?

should be 16x225 front and 16X245 rear, if standard wheels

Are you suggesting that I can get these form my Z then?

Therein lies your problem mate!

My ZX (UK spec) came with new Avon ZZ1s and the car handled awfully in the wet - I only had to touch the accelerator and the back would give.

I fitted Goodyear GSD3 F1s straight away and what do you know - no more grip problems in any conditions. Haven't tried snow yet though..... ;)

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

My old zed was an auto with new bridgestones and the back end was always going sideways for some reason. My new one is manual with Pirellis and is rock solid for some reason, maybe its just because I'm more careful knowing theres 340bhp at the wheels with this one, but I'm sure it doesn't let loose as easy as the other one. Dave

mines just got continentals, but it stills sticks to the road very well, only been caught out in the rain a couple of times

where's the rain been? it's been like 1000000c these past few days!

i have yokohamas on the back wheels and grip is really ok...its just the price of new tyres that scare me cos they are a soft compound and wear quickly

I use Bridgestone Potenza's and get superb grip in anything but monsoons where I get a little aquaplaning.
