Hi All,

Forgot to ask this when i replaced my stock airfilter with the Apexi..

The metal 'mesh' that on the MAF - was sort of all torn away on the one side..do you think it might need replacing? - the unit - not the mesh!

Thanks

oh - any ideas on prices for a new MAF?

Hmm cheers mate - but i dont have access to open the link...

Thought that mesh on the MAF was probably a bit of a restriction so I decided to remove it.

Common thought is that it's needed for some flow effect, but that dosen't seem to be the case. For one thing, it still works, the MAF voltages measured at idle and 2000,3000rpm, no load are the same. I also showed it to a guy who has worked on industrial ones for years and he said "It's a classic design and those are only for physical protection NO flow effect other than pressure drop"

Does feel a bit more responsive

hmm, was told that the mesh is there for flow reasons, & most bosch units in use now days have a very large mesh that would be no use whatsoever as physical protection

Posts: 10,660 I think the Aussie guys had a page on this and the concensus was that mesh removal did improve something or other. I actually bought a 2nd MAF just for this (like incase I bust mine) and so far all I've used it for is lending to people to confirm whether theirs is busted ...

Posts: 2,398 I took mine out as it was a bit damaged, and didn't want 3" of stainless wire falling into my turbo etc.

A guy with an S13 and a huge top mounted turbo had problems with turbulence at idle due to the AFM being so close to the turbo. He had to make a baffle to put between the turbo and AFM, all sorted now but mesh wouldn't have fixed that.

excellent cheers - think - ill take thje maf out and remove mesh and give it a clean....

are there any 'symptons' of the MAF failing?

thanks

Ed

interesting reading, but surly the mesh must have some effect? Most things we remove that mr nissan put in (like egr etc) had some function, no matter how small?

think it could be there to stop small creatures getting in and meeting a horrible death by being batted by a wiesco forged jobbie :D

the mesh over the maF IS TO PREVENT DEBRIS and sticky fingers touching the element.had them at work where a blade of grass has gone through and broken it.the element is very fragile.if a leaf got sucked in and shrouded the element it wouldnt be able to determine air flow.

as in rodents, birds, small children? :hyper:

so presumably if we all run apexi filters (kinda standard mod now) we should be ok? and expect to gain what 1 or 2 bhp?? or we talking 10 bhp>?

or OAP'S who have wondered off

In terms of flow at equal pressure drop, about 7%. Not sure how that works out in power though.

well - i took the metal gause thing off (only the one side, at the engine end - left the the other side on) and i can honestly say it feels smoother and more responive...

  • Author
sorry no i am bit confused, there are two sets of mesh?

One just after the airfilter and where is the engine side one?

both sides of the maf housing..one to side that goes into the intakes and one the side of the apexi..

  • Author
sounds best i remove both then lol... take it it was easy enough to get off?

yeah - well, mine was ripped in one part anyway so i pulled..and it all came out! it in its own ..er, how to describe..ring, thats pushed into the opening of the maf..youll see what i mean..!

I can see why its restricting though, the gauze is a really tight weave..

  • Author
but you still felt some improvement for removing it though?

any other experiances guys?

jd which you remove?

Yeah remove both - like i say , i can defo see why it is restricting with the metal weave been so tight...
