Well, I've not had a lot of luck with my heap of shit. It's kinda taken another turn for the worse.

Whilst the engine had been bodged at some point along the line before I bought it, the replacement engine I bought last month is also ****ed.

Did a compression test today and one of the rear cylinders is also down at around 50PSi.

Is there anything remotely good about these engines? Is it worth all this hassle and agro? I'm beginning to think otherwise.

Sure, I knew what I was getting myself into when I bought the thing, but this is taking the piss now. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Had a moment of madness and nearly stuck the thing up on here for spares or repair.

I certainly wish to high heaven that I'd NEVER bought the one that I have now.

I paid good money for the tidiest one I could find and people ride around in £2,000 examples and have trouble free motoring after driving them hard.

Feel for you Si but you need to buy an engine with lots & lots of history, either that or a damn good warranty, didnt you buy your new engine off ebay ?

I know where your coming from Si-luck of the draw I'm afraid.

whats the course of action now bud?-rebuild the one you just got?

Sorry to hear that Si - not a good turn of events for you.

Any car mag describes them as expensive if they go wrong and I guess that's true. It's hard to know what's a good one when you buy.

Doesn't some place in the back of one of the Japanese car mags (?J Tuner) advertise guaranteed engines from Japan for about £1K?

Yes I did Chris, although the same engine was advertised on here previously.

Not too sure what I'm going to do now. Will try and contact seller and see if there is anything he'll do for me.

i'm starting to think the same, only had it a few months and its problem after problem -strange nosies, crazy back end, wheel bearings, calipers, pads and now roten rear arches.

like a school boy i jumped at the 1st one i found, i was so amazed by the fact at owning a Z i really didn't take the chance to take a good look.

i've committed my self now, better start spending!

i love the old girl really

i think ive been reletivley lucky with my zed, only had a intermitantley fualty MAF that fooked me about for 2 month, touch wood. although now the shockers are on there way out, as well has a few other minor problems, but they all cost!

i must admit when i read some of the horror storys on here it makes me think twice about taking her for a spin.

keep your chin up si, once you get it sorted you'l wonder what all the moaning was about.

Sorry to hear that Si.

Sounds like you've been unlucky. The engines in these cars are normally strong and reliable unless they have not been properly looked after, or messed with by idiots who don't know them well enough.

Buying any used performance car is a gamble - especially an import with no history, as you never know what it has been through before arriving here.

However yours seemed a good buy at the time - as Gio and I both thought. Have you contacted the dealer who sold the car? He seemed a decent fella so won't he do something about the original engine issue - after all it didn't last a reasonable time?

Don't give up - there's always a way of solving Z problems here mate.

All the best

Richard :)

I should really shouldn't I as the original problem was there about a month after I bought the car. Oil leaking and blowing the dipstick out. He's a trader on here now as well. Just not sure where I stand.

I think people forget that these cars are 15 or 16 years old - lets face it most cars of that age are going to have problems.

sh*t sorry to hear Si :( Do you have a leg to stand on with regards to the engine you purchased..anything in the sellers advert stating condition...etc

Was it compression tested correctly?..be testing with all plugs removed. Doing it 1 by 1 will give inaccurate results.

dude i think you should get a refund & either get a rebuild of your orignal engine atleast then you know everything has been done properly or try places like API engines they have low mileage engines in stock, i bought a replacement tt engine from them 4 yrs ago cost 1,700 & touch wood its perfect so far plus you get the usual 12month/12000 miles warranty etc

  • Author

As for the replacement engine, will seek a refund.

I shouldn't be having to buy a new engine though with a problem that was current about a month into the 3 month warranty with the current engine. At the time was unaware of the problem. As it got worse, it was prevelant what had happened.

I just don't know what to do anymore. Not sure how I'd approach the trader although he's on here.

Have done Rich. Cheers. Don't want a fight, just want my Zed fixed.

I was going to mention API as well, a garage in Plymouth that was going to do my old Zed gets them from there, its the website I mentioned to you before but couldn't remember the name: http://www.apiengines.com.

Really sorry to hear that the ebay one is f*cked to. I really believe that there's no point buying a stock Zed anymore in the belief that one that hasn't been played with is better. They are just too old now. I'd always buy an already modded/rebuilt one now.

In perspective though mate, you're Zed IS still one of the nicest and cleanest around so it will be worth spending the cash on a guaranteed reconditioned engine from someone like API or another trader. Don't be too diss-illusioned with Zed ownership, its still a very good exclusive (if a little expensive) club. End of the day they are 40k cars even though the likes of ourselves get them for 4k now. 2k for an engine isn't much compared to the original prive.

I will be on the case tomorrow;)

That's just it though Dave, I shouldn't really be having this to worry about as it was a problem that initially came to light under warranty. But due to the unknown, it wasn't acted on fast enough.

Sorting this matter with Mac out at the moment, so maybe some good will come of it.

its to random buying 2nd hand engines it needs to be stripped tested and rebuilt using new rings, heads checked etc etc

its all to easy to just drop an engine in,it rarely works out well, that engine was obviously removed for a reason in the 1st place

cant jay rebuild an engine using both the donor engine and your 2nd hand unit!

:( FFS Si!!

Hope all turns out well for yer!!

I've not touched my Zed, the engine is still in the shed. The replacement engine was bought from a forum member. The car was bought from a forum trader.

you've been unlucky si, simple as that. As said you're car is a class example of these great cars. I've owned three over the past 6 years and never had engine trouble with any of them.

I truly hope you get sorted in some way, because I know at the back of it you're a proud owner like the rest of us :)

Si I said this to someone else recently, get the heads checked. I was told that my engine was goosed and it wasn't...LOL...where is SE when you need them FFS!!! If either of the two heads are even slightly out then you will see low compresssion.

P.S. don't listen to these monkey's on here either, they all talk Sh!te! LOL :D

totally agree with greg. with the age of these engines you should expect to rebuild a 2nd hand unit before installing it anyway. unless you have physically witnessed it running before it was removed its just too much of a gamble IMHO.

good luck!
