I have mostly been driving manuals and my Zed is the first Auto...

Do you get better performace with Overdrive off?

Any tips to get the best out of it? is it better to switch to OD at higher speeds?

im the same as you mate - i have found with Over-Drive off its better 'round town' always have it on when im on the motorway though

Leave overdrive on all the time otherwise you loose your top gear.

The 'power' light should come on when you boot it.

Power on, Overdrive off...........

Floor it :D

before you do any of that, fit a cooler :smash:

is it really that bad? Is it a defo getting a cooler for the auto imports?

It's imperative you fit one, no if's or but's :)

Yep, mine did!!

Now I've got my box recon'd, and a cooler fitted. And if it goes again, I'm having a bloody manual ;)

Ill take one - where do i pay etc..

email me on the address below :)

Hi

Why should you fit a cooler? Is this only for Autos?

Thanks

because your auto is a complicated hydraulic pump to put it in simple terms and without one your fluid gets veeeeerrrrry hot (to hot) and as we know heat kills

Is this advisable for all auto's or just the J-spec ones?

J-spec cars mate.....

.....the UK spec has adequate cooling for the auto-box oil owing to the higher speeds driven in UK/Europe.

If you have a J-spec car then upgrade the oil cooler to the UK spec item to stop the 'box blowing up after a (very) few thousand miles of driving over here.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Uk spec Autobox Oil cooler is just a different Rad though, easier to get and aftermarker oil cooler, use this for the engine oil and use the old engine oil cooler for the autobox. this also means you can then easy upgrade the rad to a koyo.

Something like 90% of autobox failures are due to excessive heat/overheating so an after market cooler is a very good idea. Essential bit of kit really for a J spec.

It is a case of when, not if. Upgrade the cooler to enjoy a stay of absence then take it to a specialist to rebuild it when it does go you will notice shifting inconsistencies and slipping. DO NOT fit and HKS ALC as this will accelerate the demise trust me (bitter personal experience)

The Ztech guys just did my autobox re-build and new 360deg bearing turbos. to say it feels like a new car is an understatement.......! (thanks guys)

As my compression test showed it has a good engine I guess I am now feeling what all the fuss was about at the cars launch :smash:

what is an HKS ALC?

what is an HKS ALC?

It is a crude electronic device that over rides the stock autobox controller to provide a firmer crisper more sporty shift. It basically drive the box harder than it was designed to do. On a new car it is probably an improvement that won't effect reliabilityuntil after you have sold it. on old cars like ours it shags the box sooner. At the time the auto box in the zed was at the very peak of design capability for an autobox with such high power engine they are no where near as over-engineered as other aspects of the car. Like the stock brakes they are not quite up to the job when measured by modern standards.

Stay away from the ALC and then if you want the crisper change when the box goes go for something like Ztechs 'fast road' box. My car is in a fairly light state of tune so i opted for a straight swap for a re-conned stock box.

Some people use the death of their auto box to do a manual conversion as the price seems to be comparable. others like me love the auto as it is a delight to drive for hours on end.

Autobox re-build and fit £1,800. Top job done by ryan and personally sorted me out with his courtesy car when his gearbox guys let him down. top blok top team can't say enough good about them.
