Hi all - well im still looking for a Z,

Drove a 1990 Auto N/A yesterday and 1992 Auto TT today.

N/A was ok - more responsive than i thought only not that quick off the mark - was a good test drive though, it was dry yesterday and could drive quite hard.

TT today..ok well its at an import place and hasnt been registered yet, bloke reckoned it hadnt been started since it got to his garage, there quite a lot of smoke for the first 15mins of it idling in the garage, went for a drive but it was pi**ing down so could really do much, when i did it slid all over the place, (the tyres were all shot - rekons he'll replace all of them for me).

The boost guage looked ok it was well left on idle and got to two bars to the positive side ? (that correct way to say it?!) and from reading the buying guide - thats seems that its ok. WAs a bit dissapointed tho with the test drive as i couldn't really floor due to the wet (and been in the city centre).

It has 77K Kms - and says he's got docs to prove and history from Japan too.

Interior was quite good nick - just the cover to the aircon controls that was a bit loose.

If im to have it - he's giving me 2 grand for my '94 Mr2 N/A and £2300 cash for the Zed - which i think is pretty good.

It will come with full mot and tax and 6 months warrenty.

What do you guys rekon?

Ta

Ed

Sounds iffy to me...

15 mins of smoke would make me think twice but I am no mechanic so it may be ok.

Ed

You need to take it for a good run to see how the car preforms. If he has a problem taking you so you can see how it behaves when pushed, walk away. If it does go properly and he puts new tires on it I would still want him to do a 60k service on it. Just my opinion though.

I dont know alot about the turbo version but alot of smoke for 15 mins that cant be good maybe the seals on the turbos are wearing out and when thay warm up with the metal expanding it makes a better seal but with a good six month warranty i dont suppose it matters to much welcome to the world of zed;)

if it was a wet day and the car hadnt been started for a while could it not have just been condensation,i'm no mechanic either but would think as long as it went away it would be ok

edited cause i never read the post properly :wack:

First off

Take a good look for leaks underneath

Go and start it on a cold day and see if it smells of petrol, common problem easily fixed

The start up with 15 mins of smoke...was this condensation or real smoke? if smoke what colour?

As for boost it really should go past the 2nd line as i believe that is safety boost but the gauges are notoriously crap!!

You need to take it for a longer drive on a dry day.

When you floor it the power light should come on for 10 secs on the display on the dash ( this tells you the box wont change up till the redline )

Make sure the hold function works ( this pulls away in 2nd gear and changes up earlier)

Make sure the overdrive is working ( it gives the autobox a 4th gear)

Make sure the gearbox oil is clean and unburnt, remember the first thing you will want to do is fit a autobox cooler to it as this is a problem .

If i think of anything else I will add to it

Heres welcoming you to the world of Z fun

Go and start it on a cold day and see if it smells of petrol, common problem easily fixed

As long as its just bad hose/connectors and not the other nastys that can cause petrol smells.

cheers guys - the smoke was - well smoke and a white colour mixed together i suppose - it did disappear when i was driving it though.

dont think it was a good time to test drive it really, like i say tyres were v bad, it was v wet and v busy, so..

Another question, did all the TT's have the cooler slats on the front skirt?

Thanks again

(are there any tt owners on here from brum who wouldnt mind taking me out in theres?)

Sure do - it allows the air to flow to the intercoolers, 1 either side for each turbo

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Run forrest run

sounds like a bad one to me mate

hmm - thanks for your replies, im just thinking maybe im looking for things wrong with it, and when i stand back and look:

there were no weird noises or rattles from the engine - no smoke from the engine, and, apart from it been wet so not been able to floor it , it drove fine - boost guage was in the correct position etc.

If he can, like he says, warrant the mileage and give 6 months warrenty, surely it should be fine?

Ed

smoke doesn't always have to be bad.

Could be condensation (white), especially if the weather is cold.

It's bad if the smoke is blueish/grey and smells of burned oil

as lymon says on the smoke

most important thing is to look over a couple and make sure your buying the right one,not just for conveniance for taking a PX if you have a couple of zeds to look at,then you can get an idea of which is better, even better take someone of the forum with you,if you put a post up asking for help in your area,im pretty sure someone will take a look with you,it can be a minefield finding the right one,and last thing you want it buy a car that costs you a fortune, good luck

..buy an NA - £4.3k, lets call it £4500 buys a loy of NA Z. And buy a manual, they are considerably different in character to an Auto. And with all of the money you'll save (fuel) you'll be able to buy a house...

Good luck

Jack

Yeah would be good - im going to try and get a distance from the web on how far Swansea is from Brum - also, has anyone any experiance of Keighley Trade Centre in Yorkshire? Theres a 92' Black TT for sale there?

thanks again

Ed

hello mate, another point to watch out for is the mileage cannot always be believed, i had mine serviced at a jap specialist and importer, he says that nearly all the cars that get imported mysteriously have 50-60k miles on the clock, i find it too hard to believe that no higher mileage cars get brought over, you hardly ever get paperwork from japan and it is way too easy to clock them with no UK history to back them up, all i'm saying is take it with a pinch of salt and look at the car overall

Yep - I know what your saying, thats why im not going back to the one i drove yesterday. Too many things were 'wrong' with it - well not wrong, just he said it was a show car in Japan - definately wasnt that good!!!! Must of thought i was a right idiot!!
