I have a problem with my twin turbo z32...again...

when you start the car it fires up instantly, bit rough but then its on choke..now when you come to drive it it will pull away but put your foot down even a little bit and it backfires badly and then you are lucky to get it over 30mph.

it is running very rich i believe cos you can smell the unburnt fuel from the exhaust

this is what has been done to fix this problem..

new platinum plugs

new coils (all six)

new greddy boost controller (fitted by abbey motorsport)

this car has been to zedworld but when it got there it was ok again and i drove it home (300 miles) and was fine for a few months

its been to abbey motorsport but again was fine when there and they ran it all week with no problems, drove home (360 miles) ok for few months

been to local car tuning centre (tvr specialist) done compression test, ok, used four bottles of de-coke to see if it was that, no joy.

this is what i think MAY be the problem..

got noisy fuel pump..but wouldnt it run lean?

got hks fuel controller instead of front air meters so it has a controller next to inlet manifold, but when i unplug it makes no difference. suspicious

zedworld checked all hoses for fuel / air leaks and found none.

really pee'd off cos its sat there for 8 months and i cant fix it.

does anyone know who can fix it properly cos im sick off giving it to garages who keep ripping me off.

or has anyone had a similar problem?

Please help cos i miss her and i know the z32 bunch are friendly sorts and i miss them too!

Thanks

i have lots of spares you coult try. PTU, ECU etc etc to see if you can eliminate the problem.

PTU often causes intermittent cutting out. Does it ever cut out and refuse to start then work fine an hour later?

Paul

I'm way out of my depth, but has the MAF been checked? I'm sure both garages would've checked it though. Strange one. Hope you get sorted.

I'm sure a techie'll be along shortly,but check

ptu and associated connectors

injectors and associated connectors

coil pack connectors

temp sensor and connector

check the next local meet at the nissan plant, the 29th i think (chec north east meets section)

there will be someone there willing to help

thanks guys for all the answers

she doesnt cut out after an hour

not trying to sound like a thick twat but where is this ptu?

plus how much can i get one for?

can someone recommend a GOOD garage who would look at the car locally cos it costs a fortune to ship elsewhere?

hope to meet some guys at nissan plant at the meet, i will be there.

power transistor unit (i think) as you look into your engine its at the front bolted on under the left hand side intercooler pipes (the big black one s)

it has fins running across it HTH

i take my car to http://www.robertshawracing.co.uk just up from asda in boldon for things that are to akward for me to do myself, they aint zed gurus and they are a little expensive but they know their way around most cars and are friendly bunch of guys

PTU is bolted onto the cam belt cover, bring it round to me sometime and i will show you and i even have a spare that i have loaned to loads of members while they send for a new one.

im only a couple of miles from you

pos fuel pump failure . you need to check your fuel pressure when she is playing up.

Sounds like you just have some dirty conections on either your CAS PTU or coil packs, backfiring would usually indicate unburnt fuel so i would lean towards your coil pack connectors although there could well be an issue with the HKS fuel controller espeacially if the air flow sensor has been removed and the settings have gone up the creak. I would have thought this would be evident all the time as opposed to intermitent though

 hello buddy, i have been having same sort of problem, it started of with hesitating at heavy acceleration after 30min driving, but now it does it even around 2000 revs, the other day on my way home it started hesitating, felt like miss fire heard a couple of popes and could smell some fuel then to make things scarier a red warning light came so i pulled over right a way :( switched it off for 10 min. then started up fine and drove home luckily i wasn’t far of. i just did an ecu check today and i got a code 21, which leads me to believe there is a problem with the PTU. i haven’t had time to look around does any one know how much they cost, and how easy is it to replace?

if your after a ptu ive got a S1 ptu for £45 delivered

I had a small problem like this when I adjusted my timing. Apparently I had loosened the connection to the CAS (the circular timing sensor on the RHS of the engine cambelt cover). This caused the car to start to hunt, back-fire and eventually cut out. Pushing this back on firmly stopped the problem.

So I would guess that you've got a CAS or PTU problem - check these connectors are clean and firmly located first, before doing anything else.......

just played with car while it isnt raining for once!

i have been disconnecting the coil packs to see which one is faulty...if you pull the ones on the right off the car engine note does not change...scary..the left ones make a difference though..is that still pointing to the ptu?

the wiring to my coil packs does not look great..cracked etc..

wot is that ecu check you can do with the wire under the dashboard near pedals..if i remember you pull a plug apart and bridge it and turn the ignition on? zedworld told me about this..anyone tried this?

so you have lost one bank. sounds like ptu to me buddy firing only on 3 cylinders.

see if you can borrow one off someones z to try it ...do you know anybody else with a z thats local to you?

hi

no i dont.. if you or anyone else knows anyone then it will be really appreciated..ie free beer! i presume its a simple job to swap them other..am i right?

if no one has one i can borrow than i might just buy a second hand one but problem is how do i know THAT one will be ok??

it is an easy job mate you just have to be a bit careful as the wiring on these cars are aproaching 15 years old. try and get hold of a good series 1 second hand or if you have the money just go for th series 2 one with is better value in the long term as they are 1000 times more reliable

Hi, if your problem is a faulty ptu ive got a new S2 ptu which you can have

ok

now scare the poop outa me with the price!
