Mine is'nt removed, but it was in need of regassing at the end of the summer last year...and I missed it. Its ok when on the move, but sitting in traffic sweating my tits off is not nice.

 

It also proved invaluable on road trip through france and belgium with 36 degreeC heat.

isnt that a bit pointless??? thought that the belt loss was negligible because it reduces power to the aircon when you floor it???

 

im looking more at the weight loss and better flow of air to the rad.

Mine was removed the car now runs a little cooler and also saved some weight, Have you felt the weight of the compressor :eek:

As above. Totally agree and I'm going to reinstall it, because living in the UK and especialy North Wales. Every time the sun shines all the nutters with caravans head up our way and crash and die leaving me sweating my kna*kers off in a traffic jam.

Long motorway journey's (or autobahn :D) on a hot day will be pretty nasty without AC, had mine going all the way to Berlin and back last June.

And when its really pouring down and you get in the car soaked then start it and hit the demist button and miraculously all the windows demist in seconds its brill. Just try that without aircon! You have to be nuts to go without a good working aircon system just on the imaginary benefits of a little less weight on what will still be a lard ass car even without it.

i can clear the windscreen without aircon just fine :confused: may take 10seconds longer but hey,if the car runs slightly cooler.zeds overheat and if you can bring temps down by a degree or 2 then i think id rather sweat ;)

When I removed the aircon from my Prelude a few years ago the difference in weight was dramatic, all the bits came in at over 40Kgs - the compressor was huge and the car did handle differently because of the change in weight ditribution.

That said the aircon had never worked on that car and I didn't miss it, I have never had the inclination to remove a perfectly good aircon system!

think of the petrol you save.... when you dont have aircon connected... the engine has to work harder to turn those pullys etc.. and you gain a noticable bhp with it removed.....

so its a choice.. my belt is removed.. soon to follow the full set up of it....

A 3.0 turbo will drink fuel anyway so a/c is not going to make much of a difference there. The a/c switches itself off in a ZX when you boot it hard, so no difference to performance....

 

...OK it weighs a lot but a ZX without a/c also weighs a lot ;)

 

As for overheating, if the cooling system is in good order then it won't but I will, sitting in a car during the summer.

 

The 300zx was designed as a comfortable GT car so having a/c is all part of the package. It stays.

All your reasons and facts are correct and I certainly dont seek to disagree with you. But I am looking at the subject from a different perspective.

here is my (different) view of air con.

My 300 is a weekend toy, so limited use.And only in temperate Britain.

I am attempting to build and run the fastest(on a quarter mile strip)300Zx NA V6 in Britain.

My minimalist view is.... dont fit anything to the car that isnt vital to achieving the stated aim.

So no air con for me means I'm giving up a feature I not really used to. so no hardship there.

Also the total weight saved will be significant in the overall weight reduction program.

Better airflow to the water rad will help lower running temps thus increasing power.And mechanically the engine bay is simpler, Less things to break at extreme revs.

Mine has no air-con and no heater matrix. Apart from the Maf going (again today) its ultra reliable and didn't even get hot on a hard track day at castle combe. I'd definately consider removing it if I had another one. I miss my heater matrix though, its bl*ody freezing at the moment. Its warmer to open the windows than put the fan on to clear the windscreen!!, the fan freezes my feet!!

AC is deffo staying in mine, parasitic drag is next to nothing, when its turned off its just a free turning pulley, hardly anything to worry a big v6. As for cooling, well the car was designed with the condensor in place so unless theres something wrong with the cooling then it wont overheat because of the AC, especially with a Koyo in.

As it happens I have a knackered compressor, which I will replace, never even considered ditching it.

fully agree.

 

unless you are going to fully strip the car, the benefits are going to be so minutely small that its not even worth the effort of removing it!!

 

I also do use my A/C a lot in the summer

Am still waiting for a warm enough day to benefit from having Air-con :rofl: :D

 

But on the 2nd ZX which is currently being stripped ready for engine rebuild and some extra mods, as it is to be used for weekends/Pod days The a/c system will be removed to reduce weight and slightly enhance performance.

 

If it was on a stock car with none/light modification then would keep,as it is a feature alot of people will expect to see when/if selling.
