Hicas light on for a couple of minutes after cold start.

I don't know, this weather: might be great for the turbos, but boy does it bring out the gremlins.

Earlier this week my ABS pump relay stuck on again, although now I know how to sort that out so not a big problem... no dead battery this time around. But now it's the HICAS. I noticed this first yesterday evening when I went to change the oil. Car was cold, and hadn't been driven for a couple of days, so I started the engine to get it warmed up. Warning lights came on as normal and then all switched off again, apart from the HICAS light, which stayed on. Anyway, I pottered around, got the jack and everything else out, made coffee. Probably took 10 - 15 minutes of faffing, and then I switched the engine off, jacked up the car, drained the oil, refilled, then ran the engine for another 10 - 15 minutes to flush it with the clean oil. But this time round the HICAS light didn't come on. Same again after I drained, changed the filter and refilled again: no HICAS light. And it still didn't come on later on in the evening when I went to get some petrol.

Step forward to this morning, and it's brass monkeys outside. Car is covered with ice, and I start it up and let it run for a couple of minutes to warm up and clear the windows. HICAS light is on again, but goes off after about 2 - 3 minutes. Any ideas?

I must admit I've not checked the fluid level yet, mainly because I don't know where it is, so I'm going to check that out on the "engine by the numbers" FAQ entry. But is there anything else it might be, and if it's not the fluid am I OK to drive with it playing up? Will I damage it by doing so? I need to go to my parents' today, which is around 200 miles away, and I don't really want to take it to a garage round there: if I'm going to take it anywhere I'd rather take it to the guys I use here who know the car pretty well now.

Cheers guys,

Bart

PS fluid needs topping up, green pot on drivers side of engine with black top

hi mate i have a probliem with my hi cas light as it comes on constantly. the effects it has on driving is that it tightens the steering up and makes it feel like it has no power steering. if i stop turn the car off and on it resets itself and the light goes out for a while only to come on again later.

Cheers ya5een. Turns out that's exactly what it was. Fortunately there's a Wilco motor spares place just round the corner.

I like the way it's the *lower* surface of the float that has to fall in the high-low range (http://300zx-twinturbo.com/cgi-bin/manual.cgi?list=st&dir=&config=&refresh=&slide=44&cycle=off&scale=0&design=default&total=98) just to make it slightly more of a challenge, because of course the float slips down to the bottom as soon as you pull the dipstick out. :)

Try topping up the PAS fluid as Yas said above.

Failing that it could be a faulty speed sensor.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Almost certainly a dodgy speed signal causing that, do you have an intermittant speedo too? If its an import than it could be a dodgy convertor chip, or a faulty speed sensor.

It wont be low fluid, the PAS still works even when the fluid is so low theres none in the reservoir (makes an awful noise though, found this out as it dropped all the fluid onto the m6 on the way to danny's).

My hicas light has been comming on and off for a couple of weeks, yesterday did 120 mile round trip and now its on permanat !!

Tried fluid top up ? :headvswal
