they get rusted up with gunk and pinhole....thereby dropping water into the passenger footwell....basically they give you hot air in the cabin to keep you toasty on cold days...if it happens you need to bypass the matrix or you are off the road till you fit a new one

Basically its a small radiator behind your dash in which your coolant water flows through, air is blown through it and warmed up to keep you warm ( well on most cos mines crap :headvswal ) the temperature is adjusted by a valve on the matrix to increase or decrease water flow in turn letting the matrix be hotter or cooler . HTH

You'll know if it goes because your toes will be even colder than mine are (without one cause its not worth the hassle of fitting a new one). Dave

This thread has just remined me that mine is still fooked. Back in the UK soon so will have to do that the first day back, will be the second time i've done it now FFS  .

You can still drive the car if it fails by linking the flow and return pipes but if you dont notice the leak then you could cook the engine which is never nice.

It is a big job with millions of things to remove to get at the fooker, dash board out if its your first time. Can be done with the dash in but you have to know where all those little 'blind' screws are! even worse if you have a manual as you have to remove the clutch pedal which is no fun at all.

Well ....A Matricks is a film....did not get it....So don't worry yourself...Turn off your TV..& your car will be OK....300ZX.co.uk club.org

I have also read that fitting one of Shrimpy's grounding kits can prolong the life of the heater matrix.
