Smoking in public is going to have a partial ban. Thank god! I can now go out without fear that I'm going to be breathing in noxious gasses and making my clothes stink! Bring it on!

But, I'm disappointed because it doesn't go far enough; there will still be plenty of pubs that don't serve food.

What we needed (and didn't get) is a total ban on smokin in public places so it would *force* the smokers (and believe me, nicotine addicts really need forcing) to stop. But this pathetic government just couldn't live up to their manifesto.

Well, hey-ho, it's a start and a blanket ban on smoking in all public places won't be that far off.

Drinkers are ruining my life, if I wish to walk through town at night I have to put up with their loud mouthed crap and puking in the streets.

Cars are ruining my life if I want to go for a quiet walk in the countryside the noise is too much.

Aeroplanes are ruining my life flying over head at night breaking my sleep.

Dogs are runing my life with their crap all over the pavement.

Fast foods joints with litter all over the place, mobile phones, motorbikes, the list could go on and on and on, seems to be a lot of you want big brother to have the right to ban anything they want, and with your attitudes they will.

By the way none of the things I listed there actually annoy me as I have a live and let live outlook on life, someone wants to smoke or drink themselves to death then ok but I wouldnt go on a forum bitching about it, and if I thought breathing someone elses smoke was going to kill me I would not be standing near them.

Heres the thing. I don't give a poo if you drink yourself into a stupor every night. You drinking 50 pints doesn't pickle my liver.

Can't say the same for smoking though.

This hard done by argument is continually rolled out when banning smoking is mentioned.

"Oh, next they'll be banning us from drinking / vvanking / watching TV".

Cobblers.

:)

your cars exhaust fumes could be bad for my health, drinkers turn violent that could be bad for your health, the point is someone out there wants you to lead your lives according to their plans and people are letting them.

all i have to say is bo11ox to the ban i will still smoke where and when i want to what the feck happened to freedom of choice at 31 i have been smoking for 20 with no intention of giving up or being told where i can and cany smoke a company i used to work for weanted to impose a total smoking ban and after a few months of arguments and reminders that ban was stopped so scrw the government and there bans and if non smokers dont like the smell of smoke go somewhere else

ok may have exaggerated with supermarkets, but even in restaurants smoke travels to the non smooking side though i am glad to see that more and more restaurants now have banned smooking all together.

my point was who gives the right to say "if you don't like breathing smoke go somewhere else" it annoys me when someone assumes they have more right to do be there.

everyones entitled to choose there own lifestyle what annoys me is when they force it on others

That's why they are increasing police powers. I do agree though, but currently, there's little the government can do than increase fuel duty. You just can't ban cars, it's not feasibly possible.

thats it - we'd never do anything, pisses me off when they go on about car emissions when planes dump tons more polutants into the atmosphere! - you dont see all the do-gooder tree huggers not going on their hols tho do you?? :smash:

not a bad thing to ban smoking where thay serve food IMO, but not in normal pubs :nono:

Agreed....as I said earlier...

I don't mean this personally in any way, but in general the attitude of some smokers towards their habit is fundamentally selfish.

:)

im completely with funkysi. i used to be a smoker (7 years) but quit about 2 years ago probably. now firstly, i do agree that the EU is increasingly a big influence on all of our lives and that some of the rules being imposed on us, quite frankly, suck dick.

however, it is a violation of human rights for non-smokers to have to breathe in smoke. yes, pollution is everywhere but smoke in a pub makes you cough, makes you stink and makes my eyes hurt. if smokers wish to smoke why not have a dedicated room? no rights violated that way and no problem for anyone surely?

as for people who say that 1. smoke isn't bad for you (like my boss claims, you should hear him cough and see him try to get up the stairs) or 2. passive smoking is a fictional claim...why do you think non-smokers cough when they breathe in others' smoke? its not good for you, you can't dispute it! secondly, we don't have filters in our lungs so of course passive smoking is equally dangerous. whilst passive smoking obviously inhales less than a full ciggie to yourself, if you have 10 smokers around you in a crowded room it gets to be enough!

next, i'd like to say that the thing about cars that don't go over white lines etc is a load of *****cks. some new cars have sensors which beep if you go over thick white lines at speed, ie. to prevent you from falling asleep on a motorway. if you don't like it then don't buy the car, however its only a safety feature not an infringement on your rights ffs! :) how they would build a car which didn't let you go over white lines i don't know!!! ;)

also, there are alternatives to cars whereas planes have much fewer alternatives...

how many non smoking clubs do you see currently? none, so we don't have a choice not to be bombarded with smoke, personally i welcome a ban on smoking in clubs and pubs, I am allergic to cigarette smoke, its not nice waking up in the morning with your sinus's blocked and the smell of cigarette smoke everywhere because your nose is full of tar.

I am up for people doing what they want and i don't care if someone smokes i do care when it plays havoc with myself.

and why dont the get rid of tobacco instantly? because its supporting the NHS, and why does the nhs need supporting? because of all the smokers the NHS is currently treating!

Why dont we just ban all early decatted Z's whilst your at it, so you dont smoke but you would probally be happy to decat your zed and pump shit loads of lead into peoples lungs instead.

If people didnt have such oppressed childhoods then they would not feel the need to dictate to others, I guess it could be worse, Hitler could have won the war, we would all have to drive a bmw then. :D

Surely such controversial topics should not be allowed on here as they will cause offence. I as one am pissed of by some of the narrow minded comments.

discrimination against smokers

Ex-(SMOKERS) LOL. dont make me laugh. Non-(SMOKERS) LOL. dont make me cry. You are a bunch of hench men ready to hang the smokers of the world because they cause cancer in non smokers. crap...total crap. I dont believe there is any such thing as passive smoking. And if there is what about passive carbon monoxide from exhuast fumes. are you going to stop using your cars? No I thought not. I work for the railways the drink and drugs policy on there is stricter than that of the drink drive laws. YET! they reckon that you can not get stoned passively. Well if thats the case how come you can get cancer then? 1 rule for them and another for us?

if you aint already done so then read what Jock has posted........that makes big sence to me anyway.

just a quick question to the regular smokers as some of you have mentioned you won't stop smoking and you enjoy it.

should the words be can't stop smoking and haven't got the will power to quit?

now i give in to temptation every now and again while in pubs ect as some of my friends smoke around me, i know that isnt an excuse but once i have a few pints i fall back into my old habits to have a tab when i play pool ect!

forget about the government crap at the minute

i put it to you that deep down you dont actually like smoking, fed up with the sore throats (i was) crappy cough, girls turning there noses up cos "oh you smoke" ect.

i found it one of the hardest things ive ever had to do was to say to myself "throw that pack of b &h away"

i really can't see how people actually find pleasure in smoking.. is just habitual and addiction that drives you and me to light that tab.

about 6 months ago one of the pubs in my town went to a non smoking pub. i have to be honest it was nice for me and my wife to go home after a night out without smelling smoke on our clothes. so i personally am not against banning smoking in pubs.

however im not going to get on my high horse so to speak and whine/moan about others who choose to smoke, its your choice. i will though go to places that do ban smoking rather than those that dont. especially in a restaurant, i dont think theres anything worse for a non smoker to be sat next to someone smoking whilst you are eating.

im not complaining about what it does to the atmosphere etc if i was i wouldnt drive a zed/motorbike (although may not be on a bike in the next 10yrs  ), just saying i personally dont like the smell of it...........and it gives me asthma :o .

as mentioned by others though, im sure if the sales of fags drop they will then put this cost onto something else such as our fuel or beer, so there wont be any pubs left cos no one will go cos it will be too expensive and there wont be any zedders cos it will be too costly to fill up your motors........................................................................................................come to think of it dont ban smoking!!! ;)

and i do sincerely hope my comments (which is all there are) dont offend or upset any of you.

I gave up for 2 years, the reason I gave up was everyone around me saying how bad it was not because I wanted to, started again because I wanted to, I enjoy a cigarette, wether I enjoy it because I am addicted I dont know???

I fully support the rights of smokers to enjoy killing themselves, if thats what they choose to do. However they just cannot be allowed to continue wrecking the health of people who have chosen not to expose themselves to those risks.

just being devils advocate here..(tongue firmly in cheek)...but in all fairness shouldnt those with any sort of respiratory infection be banned from going out into public either ....IIRC coughing and sneezes spread diseases....and maybe penalise the folks who send their kids to school or nursury when ill.....who then go on to infect the others kids

i used to love the office hero's who used to struggle in with their virus just to be sure we all got a dose...cheers

dont smoke myself...but can't see the point in banning stuff on the basis of disputed research....what we need an agreed set of facts it forms the basis of all dispute resolution

i dont smoke but i dont see why smokers should be seen as the anti-christ these days hell the taxes they have paid over the years to smoke must have been an awful lot of cash............the only place i reckon smokers shouldnt be allowed to smoke or at least asked to smoke outside whilst they do so are the pubs that have kids in them.

its another one of those things where if every bugger that smoked did give up businesses and the government would shat themselves with the amount of revenue that would be lost

I don't really have anything to do with this topic, as I don't live over there. But myself I don't like cigarette smoke, and I start feeling really bad when I inhale it for more than a couple of minutes, so I may be allergic to it. I think that 'passive smoking' is quite bad too, not in the same scale as 'normal smoking' but in the long term, yes. Have you ever thought about this? What is the actual meaning of smoking, why do you do it? And what if the cigarette would have been invited today? Would you ever smoke it? I don't think so! You would think that would be one of the most stupid things in the world, inhaling toxic fumes from a little paper tube. I'm sure most of you know this, but all cigarettes have several different substances which are only there to cause addiction! And many people who work for the cigarette companies don't smoke themselves, because they know the huge amount of different toxic substances that are there, and many of them are rather nasty.

They're called Mucus Troopers or Snot Jockeys ;)

I dont believe there is any such thing as passive smoking. And if there is what about passive carbon monoxide from exhuast fumes. are you going to stop using your cars?

smokers get cancer from smoke. exhale, non-smoker inhales. of course by this time it has been filtered of all carcinogenics and is completely safe...?!!

while cars are undoubtedly bad for the environment etc, i need it for travelling and i don't sit in a pub blowin exhaust fumes into peoples faces...

no beef, just saying...
