I've never seen my fuel light come on, how far down does the needle go before it usually comes on? And how much have you got left when it does?

Chris.

i have never let my run that far m8

crap in the tank might clog the injectors

i would not want to find out :)

Mine comes on at different intervals. It's rather strange. Have had it come on when the needle was not in the red.

It can be bad to run it that low. As you may get starvation. When that happens, pistons can go through blocks.

If you don't drive on boost when it's that low, you'll be ok. But say you're going round a corner and you do a hard take off.....you could find the pump will suck up nothing.....BANG!

I'm just a learner with the Z, but i've had other cars run out of fuel with no dramatic consequences, not that i want to run out of fuel, but could you explain please?

cheers

david

Not bad on a NA car, won't cause any damage, but with the sudden cut in fuel on a turbo charged car during mid stroke, it can be quite dangerous.

And you think that driving over bumps in the road and cornering hard won't stir that up then .. There is a fuel filter ...

However, running the injectors dry may damage them.

what are you on?

mid stroke the piston is either returning after igniting, exhausting the gas after combustion or compressing the f/a. (by which time its already inducted the mixture) so running out of fuel at this point will do F all.

i think youl find the engine stops pretty fast when it runs out of fuel.

because the fuel pump is continuously circulating fuel and bleeding off what isnt required, if the pump draws even the slightest bit of air, the fuel pressure drops and the engine cuts out.

the injectors are only going to run dry for a few seconds, wont harm them.

its not ideal to run out of fuel because its a pain in the arse, but its not going to damage the car.

Just fill the **** er up you can see when you have half a tank....Don't go under half a tank again.............LOL

That's what women always do..........

As far as I can see running out of fuel is just a pain in the arse - the only bad thing I reckon is is the engine cutting out after a good blast before the turbos had the chance to wind down with the usual idle session.

Anyway to answer the original question, I usually fill up when the needle gets 1/2 way into the red. The light comes on just after that time anyway - topping up from there to full takes around 60-65 litres. So bear in mind the tank hold 70 litres, you still have a over gallon or so left (perhaps 2) when the light comes on.

Good for 20-40 miles if you're careful........ :p

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

mine seems to come on about 4 minutes before its bloody empty

I've never seen my fuel light come on, so don't even know what colour it is. Just fill up when low.

I only get about 150 miles on a full tank so if I filled up when it was half empty i'd be stopping every 75 miles or so! LOL

Really can't be arsed with that many trips to the pump so i run it until the light comes on.

As for damaging the car by running out of fuel thats *****cks and who would be on full boost when they ran out anyway?!

If you're almost out of fuel you are usually trying to crawl to the nearest petrol station.

chris: you are always on full boost mate lol

mine comes on when the needle goes beneath empty, I have enough petrol in my car currently to get me to a petrol station :)

I've never seen mine come on either, though I did see it once on another Z I test drove before I got mine. I remember being quite surprised that the indicator light faded on an off... rather than just an instant off/on switch effect. Little things please little minds :D

yep, starts to light up when its quite far into the red and gets brighter the lower it goes.

mins comes on well underneath the lowest mark on the guage (about 1 mm). Always thought it was busted until I ran really low one day (no stations in the area) and it was then that I saw it. I dont know how much fuel was left though as I dont think my fuel guage is particularly accurate
