In My view and I've been around long enough to make a time worthy judgement 2005 has been a vintage year for music. I think this year three classic Albums/CD's have beeen releast. These will be classics in the same leauge as Killer "Micheal Jackson, Led Zep III, Royal Scam Steely Dan, Dark Side of the Moon "pink Floyd", Electric LADY Land "Jimmy Hendrix" You get my drift.

Well in my opinion "How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb by U2" the new Green Day albume (sorry I carn tell you its name as my 16 year old lad has beggered of with it. Well it is his) and the new "Alter Bridge Album/One Day Remains" are classics that like the previously mentined, will be as popular in 20 years time, or more populare than they were in there own time.

What do you think are timeless classics from 2005?

Green day are one of the best bands ever. Love all their albums

U2 make some of the greatest songs ever but also make a lot of total crap as well and should stick to what they are good at and cut the wierd sh1t.

never heard of the alter bridge album.

Then you got to get hold of the Alter Bridge CD, "One Day Remains".

Its goning to be a Classic album without question. Got to hear about them because my son and his mates went to watch Velvet Revolver (god knows why) while they were in the states on holiday. Anyway Alter Bridge were the support band for the gig and when Revolver came on the crowd were just chanting Alter Bridge all through Velvet Revolver.

He bought the CD. I heard it once and did the same.

Crazy frog  :nono:

I liked some Nick Drake, but its the kid of stuff you play when your in lurve and I don't do that anymore. I've never heard Martin Harley Band. they aint depressing like Nick Drake are they. I like clever lirics, but not wollowing self pity stuff.

Digitally remastered "war of the worlds". [/Quote]

So I can see you laid on the floor. Head on a couple of cushins toking on a fat J with Justin Haywood blasting into the night air. I bet you got "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" in your record collection

I have a huge taste in music and listen to all sorts (non chart stuff usually as a lot of main stream music just sucks). But don't tend to buy as much as I used to. Infact I can only think of 3 albums I've bought this year. My favourite being LTJBukem Progression sessions live in Japan.

Also bough an old Simple Minds album and a jazz/funk compilation.

Foo Fighters- In Your Honour (2 CD's- nice gimmick)

Gorillaz- Demon Days (quirky but I like them)

U2- only because it's the only other good album I've bought this year!

Green Day - American Idiot

DJ Hype - Drum 'n' Bass Essentials

Coldplay - X&Y

I get the feeling I may get laughed at for saying this, only because it even sounds to me like I've jumped on some sort of bandwagon...

I really like the new Coldplay album (sorry, I know, it's been playing to death everywhere). I've also been listening to Fundacion by Sasha quite a bit, although I don't know whether it'll turn out to be a classic album of the future - probably not, but it's great when you're churning out code.

Perhaps oddly, I've also got into The Beatles much more, although they're hardly current. This is for very much the same reason as somebody mentioned Jem above: singability. The Beatles came up with great melodies that you can just sing unaccompanied and they stand up on their own.

I think I'm probably getting old, but I've become quite deconstructionist in the way I listen to quite a bit of music. Certainly when I listen to pop/rock/alt etc music (i.e. stuff that is actually comprised of songs, rather than dance/techno etc a la Sasha), quite a strong criteria for judging a good song for me is: if I stripped all the production from this track, and just sang it with acoustic guitar accompaniment, would it stand up? Or would it still sound good if I just sang the song entirely unaccompanied? (Yeah, I know, this kind of assumes I can sing/play with enough ability not to murder the song anyway.)

Obviously it's not all about the melody, and it's importance varies depending upon the type of music you're listening too. However, if you look at "classic" popular songs that have endured for decades, and which still get loads of airplay (discounting Radio 1), they've all got a really strong melodic hook.

Erm... so that'll be the songwriting theory lecture over with then. Sorry, do have a tendency to go on a bit sometimes.
