Just wondering really!

I've had an intermittent rough running problem for ages, but more recently I've noticed that the longer I run the car for before setting off, the less likely I am to have a problem.

Usually now I leave it for about 90s before driving off, which is hardly warm I know, but seems to help; however my drive to work is only 15 mins through a town, and quite often when I pull up and dip the clutch at the end of my journey the engine revs up to 1500rpm. Only if I wait for about 15s does it then drop down to 600ish. Again, if I warm the car up for longer, the less it tends to happen.

Wondering if anyone else has had anything similar?

Mark

i drive off straight away, but dont go over 3k revs until the engine's up to normal temperature. in the winter when its really cold i'll let her run while i de-ice the windows/chisel her out of her ice cube.

I just start up and drive. BTW how did you pick this thread up Dave, have you noticed the dates?

I saw it earlier before Dave posted. I think it was because someone voted on the poll earlier today. I thought the same then. Who dug this up.....

You should NEVER idle a car from cold, it does more harm than good, it is one of the worst things you can do to an engine! You are supposed to drive straight off as soon as you start her up. It is really bad for an engine (any engine) to idle before you start driving when starting from cold, because it is much better for the engine to be under load as soon as it starts up from cold.

As everyone else says tho, don't boot it over 3000 rpm until the 'oil', not the water, is at normal operating temp!

was just about to post this!

the worst thing for a cold engine is to just sit there idling! :nono:

Ditto!!! No wonder so many Zeds are ****ed going off this post

no shit.the worst thing you can do to an engine is let it idle for too long after start up.cold start or fuel enrichment can glaze the bores. :nono: .zeds will not allow full boost till till the ecu detects a safe engine temp.(as long as you still have waste gate solenoids). :smash:

I leave it as long as I do any other car, which is probably about 10 seconds.

Got to move her car off the drive, Get Zed out of garage and put into street, Lock garage, Put her car back onto drive, Then Get back into Zed and drive off, could take about 5 minutes. PITA

Where you live and where you keep your car obviously dictates. I live on a farm and it's 400 yards to the road that is that narrow and windy that you would be stupid to exeed 20mph incase a Tractor (or trackor as they call em round here) is coming round the bend.

so it takes me about 3 mins at 2nd gear driving (under 3000rpm before I reach the A road and then Like Legrath I keep her under 300orpm untill my water temp hits 70c.

You guys saying this is bad for her if so I'm scoobied, because I have no choice.

No Mark what you are doing is fine :) The problem is with letting the car sit there edling from cold. The best thing for an engine is to get it up to temperature as quickly as possible - the best way to do this is to put it under load - ie drive it :)

Agree totally 101%. It's logic too. You've got no oil at the top of the engine when starting from cold, the best way to get oil up there is to drive it. Oil won't get up to the top end as quickly if it's just sat at idle.

I'll leave mine to idle a bit if I've used boost before I turn it off. But I tend to plan ahead a few miles and drive in vacuum, so that when I do come to park the car, 20 seconds of idling is all really, if that, almost none if I've driven off boost for the last few miles. But usually takes about 3 mins of idle to get the car back onto the drive and into the garage.

PMSL @ the person that leaves it idling for 10 - 15 mins on startup.

hahaha! ive been 'polled' :x: :smash: didnt even think to check the date of the last post! ah well at least its fired up some interesting conversation.

ps. when i said engine temp, i meant oil temp. obviously. :D
