what are the biggest pros and cons between front mount and side mount intercoolers? remember posts about this before but couldnt find them?

not gonna be after a huge amount of power/boost, but want a good upgrade. noticed a big split at japfest of those with front or side mount and wondered what made people choose their particular ones?

cheers

all im saying is on here everytime somone says something that someone else dsnt agree with they get put down or woteva, i was just giving my opinion and would gladly be corrected by somone who could explain to me how and why instead of just take th piss.

if you re read my posts you'll c me and paul were talking about two different things mainly because when we at Holset talk about lag we mean spool up time. so yes i do no what the **** im talking about, seeing as i match prototype turbochargers to engines that havnt even been released yet everyday.

the debate here should not be about SMIC vs FMIC which is what it seems but about volume.

Its got NOTHING to do with who agrees with what and as far as I am aware people do not get put down!

If you really must know I was and am having a laugh with Chris as we spoke on the phone in between posts.

Its got NOTHING to do with you but I see as usual you have to do your attention seeking yet again and quote.........

don't take a genius to work out who you mean

Why not ask Chris what was said on the phone your name did not even come into it. Now if you want a real ding dong with me then get your self in fight club thats what its there for.

Oh and I promise I won't ban you either.

yay iv learnt something!!! :nana

funniest thing of this thread is that from what i understand, everybody has been saying the same things!!!

right. lets keep things simple!

the larger volume of air between the turbo & the engine, the more lag you will have. (lag being defined as the amount of time to generate positive boost)

FMIC's generally have a larger volume of air than SMIC's

FMIC's are generally not needed until 600+bhp (many dyno charts in the US to prove this)

ok?

would i be right in saying that it is not so much an arguament between fm and sm, but a matter of the actual size (including lenght and height etc) of the intercooler/s, the length of the pipework to them and how well they have been fitted?

Correct! you could call a stock side mount a front mount if you mounted it in the middle LOL however...............................

Most FM have a very large core so I would guess that means that a FM will produce more lag than SM

All want to put across is that i have heard people spout this and that on the FMIC debate, higher temps and increased lag. All i am saying is that from my own personal experience with having the GReddy front mount is that i get no increased lag and no increase in temps.

There's no experience like 1st hand experience ;)

Whatever Iain, I'm not going to be baited into a personal slanging match. You have every right to think/beleive what you do but that doesn't necessarily make you correct and so whoever you were referring to, this comment was unjustified especially seeing as you simply copied and pasted a generic SMIC vs FMIC response with no background explanantion.

Don’t you just love it when people argue that know **** all about what they are arguing about PMSL

The theory is spot on, any increase in volume of the inlet piping will lead to an increase in lag as defined by Paul.

However in the Z specifically, the air travels a long and tortuous path (many bends) to the inlet manifold because the air is collected at the front, travels to the rear lower part of the engine bay (compressor) and then back to the SMICs at the front before going back again to the inlet plenum. There is already an inherent lag which to us is stock response.

Any increase in lag depends on the increase in volume relative to the existing volume of the inlet pipework. The increase in volume is a small fraction of the total volume and therefore the increase in lag is a small fraction of the intrinsic lag. In practical terms you would not even feel this!

IF you fit a larger intercooler and you actually notice an increase in lag then unfortunately you are using an intercooler that is way too big for your application and you need to downgrade beacuse you are actually hindering performance.

Yes FMICs look the *****x but unless your pushing big power you dont need them. If you want to improve charge cooling, spend your cash on a water/methanol injection kit or on a chargecooler with an independant coolant supply.

Yaseen

I did wonder where yourknowledge came from Yaz..... :)

It'd take a lot of balls to come on here stating FACT after FACT when you actually know sh1t.... I though I knew a bit but then after a lengthy chat with JD last night, I know fVck all!! LMAO

This is all very interesting stuff from all parties....

I certainly don't know about the zed as much as JD, Duffer, Lymon, etc. its scary how knowledgable they are specifically on the zed but its a damn good thing we have them.
