I'm considering a 300ZX (from an ex-Prelude owner).

Hello all,

I considering buying a UK spec Nissan 300ZX TT. I have always considered the 300ZX to be one of the best looking cars on the road, ever. My last car was a 1997 5th generation Honda Prelude 2.2 VTi.

I have checked out the Buyer’s Guide which is good. My main query about the 300ZX is reliability. How would you rate it’s reliability? What are the running costs like? For example, how much would a new headlight, electric window motor or oil filter cost? When would it need new turbos and how much do they cost to replace? What is oil consumption like?

Also, if there is anyone in the Crawley area, please feel free to show off your pride and joy in front of me. Go on, make me jealous.

I'm not too far from you mate ..

welcome to pop rpound or we can meet up .. generally the Z is quite reliable .. it does need TLC though

It is just like a woman ... needs attention ... and when it gets it very reliable .. IMO

dont forget though when looking at this forum, most people only post when their car is running crap.

Mine was reliable...appart from the autobox!!

i'd say go for it, most cars of this type like a 300TT, GTO, Supra etc even a prelude, parts are expensive and garage bills will be expensive unless you are handy and not scared to have a go with the repairs.

Lets face it buying a car is a lottery, look at the grief that can be had with a brand new friday or monday car so as I said at the start of this post......

GO GET A 300 TT , I bet you wont be dissapointed.

Cheers John Crisp

AMEN!

I have had my uk TT zed for over two years now and it has been very reliable. The only time it has let me down was when a intercooler pipe blew off while I was overtaking a car on the motorway, I was running 15.5psi a the time :)

Servicing is esential on these cars, as with any high bhp car. Make sure you buy one with lots of service history if possible. UK spec tend to suffer a bit more with rust so give the body a good checking over. J sepc if your going to import, and this is my personal opinion, if low milage its could very well be clocked as a lot of imports (I have seen this on all makes and models) tend to be around the 55000km on clock regardless of its age, be careful.

The zed is a great car and if looked after well it will treat you well.

Being honest I have had a lot of grief with mine and its cost a fair amount for parts over the 2 and a half years i've had mine but thats the fun of owning a supercar and the only thing i'd change my TT for is a Skyline GTR even though it looks nothing compared to a 300.

As for fuel consumption I was gettin about 15 travelling to and from work but I have a Renault 19 diesel as a daily driver with the zed on classic as a 2nd car so thats worth thinking about as well.

Go do it and stop thinking about doing it.

Oopsie with regards fuel consumption i never even thought about what i'd get to the gallon...surely the last question on anyone's mind while considering a 300TT.....3 litre V6 Twin turbo......schhhwwingggggggggg.

Cheers enough warbling from me....John Crisp

Glad to see you've still got her, John ... I'm just starting to look for my 4th - LOL - it's nice to see that at least the first is still living on in your tender care. :D

CheerZ,

JB.

It would have to have a manual transmission and as late as possible. From memory, I think Nissan stopped supplying it over here during 95?

I understand the 300ZX will drink more petrol than the Prelude, but how much. A full 60 litre tank of petrol used to last about 330 miles or so. What’s the 300ZX like?

Also, regarding the UK cars, where the any variations in specification / trim level?

great cars just tread carefully pick a good one and you wont look back, well you will when your admireing the lines of the z

When i bought my car from John-Boy I drove it from Maidstone to Glasgow, got lost a few times to adding miles, i think it was roughly 530 miles i travelled on a tank and a half at a steady 75 with a few bursts, I never calculated a proper figure but considering I dont think thats too bad and with all cars driving style etc has plenty to do with fuel consumption.

I wanted a manual but ended up with an auto but plenty people on here have converted them with parts bought from some of the breakers on here.

F*** the petrol & the honda Preview. Just get a ZED.  They make OK bikes but don't do cars that well. So if youwant to stay with Honda GET A BIKE !!!!!! You will not look back to Honda. :smash:

i don't think fuel consumption is all that bad for a zxtt. Consider driving a jag or early 911 turbo, SEVERE fuel consumption.

Driver satisfaction from a 300zx is way better. Go for it fella. I'm sure any of the guys on here that live close to you would gladly go with you for a test drive and give you advice that would normally take you months, big internet bill, and not entirely accurate.

'94 M is the last year you can get, and tbh, my personal preference is a manual too - it really makes the most of a great engine IMO, but then that's down to personal preference above all else!

As for variations between UK and J-Spec there's not that much in it, they're all pretty well equipped, but the J-Spec ones do come with natty fold in leccy mirrors as standard, and quite a few have the funny parking aerial too.

I think the most important difference is the oil-cooler on auto models, which is smaller on the J-spec and a recommended upgrade. I've had both UK and J-Spec, and I think by the time most of them make their way to you, the add-ons of previous owners tend to be far more telling.

BTW, if you do elect for a J-spec they did produce them up to year 2000, but later ones are still commanding a lot more money, AFAIK.

CheerZ,

JB.

Just to add to John-boy, the UK car come with 245 tyres/wheel as standard and the J spec have smaller 225 on the rear. You will also find it easier to insure a UK car and it will probably be a bit cheaper too.

Go for a manual gear box, they are much more reliable and can take lots of power if you plan to start moding.

Welcome to the forum :nana2:

I have a UK spec auto (now up to 79K miles) and it's been very reliable since I've had it. I've had the PTU problem that hits about all series 1 cars at 60k-ish miles (cost about £120 from Courtesy Nissan in USA - well over £250+vat from Nissan here  ) and I had to replace the battery last month.

Basic servicing doesn't cost the earth either. My local garage charges me around £75 inc VAT but I do supply my own oil at an extra £30-ish - a good fully synthetic every time. Never skimp there.

I average around 19mpg with a mix of town/a-road and fast driving. On a long M-way run at a steady 90-100mph I get around 260-270 miles from a tank before the light comes on.

Take your time and pick the right car but remember even the newest are around 11 years old (unless you can find a rare v. late import) and with any similar high performance car things will be of the age where they need replacing.

Good luck

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

To be honest, petrol consumption isn’t a big thing to me, but I don’t really want to spend over £30 a week. The thing that puts me off getting another Prelude is the incompetence of the Honda dearlerships. They are really thick and haven’t got a clue what they are on about. F W Mays Honda in Redhill had a detrimental effect on my car. The problem with Preludes and other cars such as a 200SX and 300ZX is that you can’t take them to any old back street garage as the car needs specialist knowledge and faults sometimes aren’t easy to fix.

I am a member of http://forum.hondarevolutions.com/ and I was informed by a 200SX S14A owner that 200SX owners have the same problem with Nissan dealers.

So, the main deciding factor in getting a 300ZX is it’s reliability. In the past, I was unfortunate enough to own a French car and it was constantly going wrong and needed fixing. Whereas my Prelude was fantastically reliable.

Please give me some examples of things that have gone wrong with your cars and how much they have cost to get sorted. What are you experiences with Nissan dealers like?

If you dont want to spend more than £30 a week on fuel :x: i wouldnt suggest a Z fella.

One thing to say is that we are backed up by a very extensive and superb range of Traders for the 300zx. From OEM, new, used and performance parts to Specialist garages.

Im sure there are a few members that have used Nissan dealers, but the large majority would'nt avoid taking their cars to them. (there were only a certain number of Garages trained for the 300zx, and that was about 15 years ago).

depends on how may miles u do ;)

:rofl: For £30 notes about 60miles.....

I did about 150 miles per week, half of which on the M23 at a steady 65 - 70 MPH. My Prelude petrol tank held 60 litres of petrol and I used to fill up about every 2 - 2.5 weeks. So, it cost about £40 - £45 every two weeks using standard 95 RON Shell unleaded (Optimax made no difference, it even seemed to decrease performance on my car). How does this compare to a 300ZX?

I used to drive 50 miles per day mon-fri in the ZX and spent around £50 per week depending on the pump price. I have a UK car so standard 95ron is fine. Optimax doesn't really make any difference to my ZX's performance either, although I do get an extra 15-20 miles between fill-ups with it.

Import owners will tell me if I'm wrong here, but imports will require Optimax or at least super u/l....

As far as Nissan dealers go, most are cr@p. But Dan Perkins in Slough is actually very good - they have a ZX specialist in the workshop. (Although they do sh@g you up the @rse with the cost of parts  )

Dealers.....TBH I wouldnt let any Nissan dealer near my ZED as I work for a dealership and see the shit that goes on behind closed doors. I think its a dealer thing in general,

not just Nissan, usually overpaid underachievers with maybee 1 or 2 people running the garage who know what the score is, but I know thats not the case in all dealerships, i bet there are people who are happy with their dealer service.

Just a personal thing with me.

BTW 10 quid petrol got me 30 miles travelling to work all stop start not above 40 mph apart from a short blast of dual carriageway.......hope the mrs dont see this......

Do it. I had a prelude for over 3 years.

The z Car gives satisfaction in the same way as the prelude.

Do watch out the chasis does not give anything like the grip the prelude has, but the power difference makes up for it.
