Basic tinkering/modding only for me - I don't trust myself to do anything complicated!!

Given the right tools and setup, reckon I could do pretty much anything. At the mo, I only have a Leatherman and a couple spanners LOL! :D

Used work in a machine shop, running lathes, milling machines etc. Now I maintain helicopters. Pretty mundane but pay's alright!

:duffer:

I'm no good really!... I know that if I started down anything half, no, quarter-tricky then I'd end up with a car that can't be moved anywhere stuck out in my allocated parking space, in the rain, with me ringing around begging for help!!!

OK at electrical stuff - mechanical: will have a go at the basic stuff if the right tools are available, other than that I don't mind paying someone to get the job done right - hello Kev at Knaresboro and Peter at PPS

Engine work...hell if I'm not supervised I'd start a fire! Bodywork on the other hand...now that's a totally different matter ;) :D

Can do a basic service no probs, oil/filters etc.

Anything more than that, it turns into an MFI

wardrobe...ie: lots of nuts/bolts left over!

Then spend the next 2 weeks wondering whats

gonna fall off first!!

Two years ago id of answered..... I can do a full service and replace bushes and turbos etc maybe even, I can remove and rebuild the engine

Now i will answer...... I can only top up screenwash and make basic checks

am machine tool fitter by trade time served :nelson:

BUT its the time, as mac300zx found out!! :headvswal

Now I live breath ans sh1t ASDA now.

There in nothing on earth that cant be fixed! its just the cost thats the problem!

I'll have a go at anything (but I know that Jock is only 5 mins up the road if/when it all goes pear shaped  )

Mate, you've been doing it too long then... gimme a go!! Swap jobs with me (desk jocky upgrading laptops and PC's at the mo)

I'd like to do something interesting like that... do you get to go up in them much? Can you fly them? I had a lesson once, great fun, just too damn expensive :(

Have done a few years as a car mechanic etc

S

I can do the basics, oil change, clutch, brakes etc .... but I would't even consider taking the engine out. I had enough problems just changing the vac hoses.

:D

Im getting better, was a complete novice before i bought the zed.

Have done

Oil Change

Install Blitz Induction

Install BOV's

Install WW Front Bumper

Wire in DVD, TV, Snooper, GTEC

Remove Speedo Converter

Remove and refit rear bumper

Vac hoses replacement

AIV Removal

I know these are basic things but its more than i have done in the past

If I got the right tools and know where everything is I could pretty much do anything too, the thing I do have is a real good memory, so I'm never too worried about how far I go. My theory is as long as you put it back how it was, what can possibly go wrong! So replacing new parts is the same, as long as it goes in right and everything else goes back together right then no probs! Im also pretty good with car electrics, but anything really serious and I can't go on without the wiring diags.

As it says - how clever are you with the spanners, mole grips etc?

I put down change oil caus theres not one that says take out gearbox with supervision or can do anything on someone elses car caus if it aint mine i,ll take engines out (which i,ve done on escorts ) and strip out down to shell (which i,ve done on sierras) :hyper:

I'm no good with matchsticks but I recently knocked up a power steering pump using just iron filings, lark spit and some old pinball machine parts. :)

It was for my Hillman Imp, not a Z though.

Good to see so many people change change turbos without removing the engine ! ;)

lol...just what I was thinking.

A difficult one to answer....in theory everyone (well nearly) is capable of doing any of the above(except the matches one perhaps;))...with the right tools...its more about what you'll Feck up while doing it, and wether you willing to attempt such things in the first place.

Previously with other cars, the most I would do was basic service stuff, but with the zed as a 2nd car and not having to worry about time off road, Im willing to have a go at more complex and daunting tasks.

I can change the tubbies on the Z no probs, as long as someone else takes the engine out lol :P

but seriously, I thought that too, but going on past experience and replacing tubbies on ovlovs, 200sx's and various renaults I thought I'd put that one down hehe.

LMAO .. Yep taking the engine out and putting it back in is key. Gotta respect the fellas on here who do that. I honestly don't think I could do it without help. Mind you, once youv'e done it then I guess it does get easier as your onfidence grows .. just seems a bit daunting to me at the mo

Like most things, if you are prepared, you are half way there...

I think the BEST tool you could ever have to do a difficult or unknown job on the ZX is a laptop resting onthe wing of the car, with a fast connection into the Forum...

There's more knowledge on this forum than in ANY owners manual or workshop manual.... somebody (bodies) ALWAYS knows the answer to any questions. Fantastic.
