There is a 10mm nut and thread, underneath the handbrake lever, accessed by sticking a Socket through the Handbrake gaitor.

New pads or new handbrake shoes? I replaced the handbrake shoes and this sorted out my vertical handbrake!

Quoted By Zx rally:

"where do you take up the slack on hand brake cable as fitted new pads and handbrake lever still in same position"

As Mike has pointed out the handbrake and the rear pads are two seperate items, the handbrake is in board of the disc which needs removing to access the handbrake shoes.

Often the cause of the excessive handbrake travel is caused by incorrectly set shoes.

Firstly the amount of dust material in there cannot escape and tends to trap between the inside of the disc/drum and brake shoes when appling the handbrake. This often then leads to a poor operation / hold as the dust acts to reduce the friction between the two ( reduces the contact area)

Then the driver pulls the handbrake on harder to compensate, this process continues until the cable stretches.

Removing the discs and cleaning out all of the dust and then cleaning and roughing up the brake shoes can effect a repair, however the inside of the discs surface tend to be been worn by this stage and although the handbrake travel will be reduced the effeciency can still be lacking, replacing the disc will solve this however if this is the case.

Unfortunately adjusting the cable at the lever point will have the effect of reducing travel but not effeciency if the main problem is inside the disc hubs.

Hope that helps
