Hi all

The situation is I'm looking to get a hold of one of these cars. After a long search I have narrowed it down to these 3 motors.

Mitsubishi GTO

Toyota Supra

Nissan 300z

The purchased motor will be second hand. My preference is currently the 300z, manual ofcourse. But I'm keeping an open mind. I wanted you guys to note down which is your preference and an un-biased view on all three cars. All help is appreciated.

Cheers all.

If you want to drive it buy the Supra if you want to fix it buy the other two.

If you want to drive a car that looks like a frog, buy the Supra not buy the other two.

too true Roy

Hey Roy I cant remember the Lamborghini Designers going to Toyota and saying " We want to replace the pop up lights on our Diablo and are very interested in installing some frog eyes from your Poopra"

ps, as a 300ZX site, you are highly unlikley to get an unbiased opinion!!

most of us had the same choices when we bought & doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out what one we went for!! ;)

pps ignore BigRoy - hes the only gay on the forum

At one stage I was looking at all 3 - in fact it was a Supra for sale that first got me thinking about grey import J fun. After some consideration and just as my own NVHO, I thought Supra = J attempt at a US muscle car, GTO just too umm gadgety and 300ZX v classic looks, v European GT supercar flavour, engine in the front driving wheels at the rear as God intended, loads of true sports heritage and (at 6 foot 3) I could get in it. And it's a 2+2. With a big tailgate load space.

Then I test drove one. Turbos worked. Love at first gear. Job jobbed. :)

I have had a 300 and a supra, and i have driven a few GTO's and all i will say is if and when i buy another it wont be a GTO or a supra!! saying that the supra was well put together but it didnt have that "IT" factor for me the 300 is just special

But you have to drive them all and decide for yourself

  Guess what each club will recommend :slap:

Every club will recomend their own...however read any review of the GTO versus Zed, and the winner is very very clear ;)

As for Poopra versus Zed....these two are very similar. The Supra had the slight advantage in out of the box performance (it runs a higher boost pressure as stock) and carried 555c injectors for cheaper tunability once you get to the 450bhp mark.

Im personally not a fan of the Looks or image of the Supra however, which is why the Zed was a clear winner for me.

Plus I had always wanted one ....before I had ever heard of a GTO or Poopra. :D

Look its really simple. If its your only car then buy the supra but not some jspec tat! If its an additional car then buy what looks the nicest in your eyes.

my zeds my only car & i do 10k+ miles a year in it  :p

For what it is worth, I have owned both a Supra and 300ZX (still got that one). IMHO, the Supra (98VVTI TT) was a very well put together car. It had great potential and in my 6 months of ownership was very reliable. My main reason for selling was it just did not move me in the same way as the 300 did. I would look at the Supra and 300 side by side and always reach for the 300ZX keys when I wanted to feel good! That probably reveals more about my curious personality than the actual cars, but hey-ho! I would say that the Supra appears to be much more reliable because the vast majority of them are M reg (94-5) and above. The vast majority of 300ZXs are K reg (92) and below. That would explain why so many Zs appear to require "regular" maintenance. That said, they do need TLC as would any car that is over 10 years old. I'm sure there will be a rash of Supra problems in the next year or so when they reach the stately age of most Zs!

well said phil,

GTO good handling car,ok looks!a bit on the heavy side and feels it,at all times!

SUPRA top performance car, less hassle to tune but feckin ugly LOL

300ZX feels like a sportscar, good looks, roof comes off for the summer great car forum with help at hand, maybe it lacks tunability, handling but IMO is an allround sportscar, find the right one and you wont look back

iv driven a GTO didnt like it so i can pass comment, supra is ugly you only need to look at it to make your mind up ;)

I know what Phil is saying, Ive learnt to love my supra, in stock trim they are very uninvolving. Spend 1K and unleash 407bhp and that soon changes. On a looks basis I did prefer my Zed, I feel it now looks dated but that is part of the charm for me. The poop has grown on me, it has alot of street presence and I agree, it is Toyota's go at a muscle car. With regard to age of vehicles, whats the highest mileage Zed we have on here?

Seen people with 150k miles on here. Most are under 80k, but i bet 80% of them are clocked.

Had two Supras and currently have a facelist GTO Twin Turbo 4wd 4ws 6 Speed and a Mk4 300ZX TT.

What do I prefer? Overall, sorry its the GTO. With its 4wd it gets the power down every time, no drama, and in the facelift (non popup headlight form) I think it looks better. The exceptions I would make is driving position, if you have very long legs the ZX is better and the Targa top for the summer. As for reliability the GTO has never missed a beat in the 4 years I have owned it.

So out of 10 its Supra 8, ZX 8.5 and GTO 9 for me.

Thanks for all the advice lads. Ultimately it's the test-drive that will decide it for me.

As for the

if you have very long legs the ZX is better

Yep, I'm 6'4", so comfort whilst driving is really important. :)

Yep - mines a daily driver great car.

I wonder why most Zeds have less mileage than most supras in the UK? But then were not talking about which car is better built we are talking about the emotive subject of looks.

I also looked at and drove all three before I bought my ZX.

It was a close thing, (very close thing) between the 300zx and Supra.

The GT was just too heavy with too much lag to cut in the mid-range overtaking speeds. The 4wd was good, though but I prefer rolling performance to immediate grip off the line as it is more useful for my driving needs. As Ronflat says the late spec GT is the best looking of the GTOs.

The Supra is a great car - then it should be as Toyota had to spend years developing it, in order to better the 300zx. It is much more modern but IMO too "polished" resulting in a less involving driving experience. And it is ugly

The ZX is the best looking in a clean, classic kind of way and has definately aged better than the others. Whilst the UK Supra is quicker out of the box (it is 320BHP stock and a few kgs lighter than a ZX) the ZX felt the better drivers car. The ZX was ultimately the best value as 2 years ago a decent UK Soop would have cost me at least £12k but my ZX was half that

Take a drive and make your own choice - you won't be disappointed with whatever you end up with :)

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
