It's probably been asked before, but I just cant be arsed to search this time (as it wont come up with what I want, even if I do  )

Can I just go into a motorbike shop and get the correct size front number plate made up to fit the 99 spec front bumper location? (if that makes sense?) Or is there more to it than that?

TIA

The law says that you must have a full-sized number plate unless there is not enough space for one. So as long as it obviously impossible to fit a full size plate then you should be fine.

I'm not sure how this really works when you can't have a full-size plate because of a modification you've made yourself, but I doubt it'd ever be an issue because there are not many police officers who would know that the front bumper is non-standard.

The place that you get to make up the plates should be able to advise you further - they should know the law.

you could ask Dunx21, he is a signmaker by trade.......

So do you make number plates up, and how much would one be? :D

the problem is that with a 99 frond end, a full size plate will physically fit - it just doesnt look as good!! :D

Rory....

UK Traffic police are often a bit harsh..... I had an imported Hilux Surf, and got a b o l l o c k i n g for the wrong shaped number plates and the fact that they had 3D letters (not even real 3d just the ones that LOOK 3D).....

So contrary to popular belief, they (often) do know what there are doing (even if we dont always agree with the!!)

To save this thread getting to the usuall 'This is' and 'This Isn't legal' type stuff, i think it's fairly safe to say that these plates are not legal to be put on for road use, and I'm fully aware of that fact (but thank you anyway). The only legal way is to use a UK standard plate.

I can recomend fancyplates.com too. Was impressed with them. They can make and design and size, without the need to provide ID and follow the strict legal procedures, as they sell them as show plates only.

p.s Motorbike shop no good for a Front plate surely, since Bikes only wear rears (yellow)

I can supply number plates with std border and in the Motorcycle size for the front. The letters can be in standard, carbon, 3D, and rasied styles (These are all legal effects)

Can I just go into a motorbike shop and get the correct size front number plate made up to fit the 99 spec front bumper location?

Only if they are a Registered Number Plate Supplier http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/rnps.htm - and, oh look, Outlander is! http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/rnps/search.cgi

Blimey, you're young. :D "Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1.9.2001 can display a number plate at the front but are not required to."

Not quite: you can (on some cars) have smaller plates quite legally

"Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates"

So it all turns on the wording "cannot accomodate standard size numberplates". Clearly JDM rear bumpers "cannot accomodate" but 99-spec front bumpers? I guess it depends on how well-disposed the MOT / plod is.

Absolutely - they have to be registered, they can only supply legal and they have to record your (and your car) ID details.

As oneday says, there are a number of legal 3D and other effects - he's got a poster with them all on and can do them while you wait (plug OK for you, mate? :D )

It's all here http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm

Gio "I'll do anything for a discount!"

Basically as long as the characters are standard UK sizes you should be OK.

I have the 99 spec front with a smaller plate - but only smaller in width. The height is standard UK, to accommodate the correct size letters but as I've a private plate with only 5 characters and no horrid EC flag I got the width reduced to the same size as the plate panel on the bumper.

No problems with MOT or plod (yet!)

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

or you could try GTGRAFIX they also do custom plates with badges different coloured surounds and any text you want ..................very quick too i used them for my plates and was impressed

Steve

Anyone know the size of the JDM rear plate?

Is it a motorbike or 4x4 style?

Its slightly bigger tham Motorbike, so I presume 4x4 size. Although Motorbike size will fit fine, and IMO looks better as its a bit smaller.

The JDM plate is 330mm x 178mm with M/C size letters.
