Well, after 3 weeks of Zed ownership I have a knacked engine. I'll not get into the nitty gritty but it looks as though the best way to go from here is to break the car. I'm definitely not going for an engine swap or a rebuild.

Now I could sell the car on for someone else to break but I'll not get very much at all for it. I'm sure I'll be able to make most of my money back selling the the bits individually but I don't have the expertise or space to break everything.

It's a Red, 1992 UK spec TT manual with full leather. The body work is very good for the age and the paint hasn't faded at all.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice? I'm gutted!

It si a lot of aggro breaking a car, especially if you dont have space to do it in. Also you will have a large lump of steel (possibly without wheels) to get rid of at the end up. You can sell almost every part of her, but it will take you time and effort, and you will need to strip all the components and make a realistic evaluation of their condition, nothing will slate you faster than selling a second hand part thats knackered.

I`m interested in buying it off you mate.

let me know, pm or mail mickeyb3275@hotmail.com

cheerz.

Blimey mate,3 weeks!! -I'm gutted for you, where did you get it from?-and how is the engine knackered?-seems a shame to break what looks like a nice nick Z.

The radiator cracked and lost all it's fluid causing the engine to overheat. I bought the car from AndyZ but the radiator was obviously ok at the time or I wouldn't have made it home. I had her in for a belt service the other week and also had the front bushes and propshaft bearing replaced (£800 all in). It's just the engine that needs sorting and I'm not too keen on the idea of more expenditure at the moment as you can probably understand.

I take it you have tried to run her up afterwards?-out of curiosity, where did the rad crack?

That seems a terrible waste of what looks like an otherwise tidy car.

I would look at a replacement engine - someone could supply a decent one, I'm sure. Give AndyZ a call anyway. He may offer you a good engine at a reasonable price as you bought the car from him - he's a decent guy.

It is deffo too good to break.

Good luck mate

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Now that is a possibility. Anyone have an idea how much it would cost (labour wise) to replace an engine?

My thoughts exactly, trying to think of ways to save a Z! ;)

Try Andy,he can supply and fit,or give Baggins a shout(Z-Tech),see where the land lies so to speak, its defo to to good to break by the looks.Tony

:(:( Even tho i would love ya clocks mate......i would rather you found a way to save her and keep her on the rd...:D she does look like a good un ... even tho it is RED...

you cant break that, i went thru the same thoughts my self when someone rear endeded, mines the other way round mint engine but needs full respray and body repairs, gonna stick it out and do it bit by bit, i know it will be worth it,

Breaking it is a LOT of hassle - even the logistics of getting the right bits to the right people and then collecting the money is a nightmare, quite aside from taking the car apart in the first place.

You learn a lot though. ;)

My first Z cracked a bore and I swapped it plus cash for a working Z from AndyZ. I'd definitely speak to him and to Dave C and see what they offer.

If you want to swap a new engine in you have the challenge of finding a decent engine with some provenance. If you search here a few ways you should find some names of scrappies / engine merchants that have some.

The car from AndyZ turned out to have oil starvation problems, so I took a flyer on buying a car which had an argument with a motorway bridge and as it turns out it was a fantastic engine - but after THAT swap I killed the rear of the chassis, so I took that as a sign I should give up altogether.

It should cost you under a grand to get the engine swapped - for someone with a ramp and hoists it's not THAT much work.

Get Away is it  dont know where you got that idea from ;)

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement guys - it's much appreciated. Keep it coming... I'm taking it all on board and considering each of the options on merit.

1) Break (Nooo they all cry!)

2) Sell on to someone who wants to use a good UK chassis with a replacement engine (Got 3 people interested so far)

3) Engine rebuild (will take me above my initial budget, although give me a mint car)

4) Engine transplant (ditto)

What a way to spend a week off work.. :(

give me a bell mate i may be able to sort it for much cheaper than you think

Ryan

Although you cooked the engine, what is the actual problem with it ??

I got Jeff to take a look at it and he said the headgaskets on cylinders 1 and 2 are gone. :(

Damn thats in good nick for a UK spec Zed, much better nick than mine for sure! And a manual too! How rare?!

If u break it, I will take the front bumper, but do as everyone else says, dont break it!

Best of luck mate....:)

That'll be both gaskets then! ;)

Your engine will be delivered to your chosen destination, will keep you updated on its progress ;)

It's amazing how much you learn when your car breaks down. If it weren't for the financial sting I would almost recommend it!
