what mods do you have?

I would get intake and exhaust first before bothering with a chip.

once you've got the breathing sorted, get yourself a chip and crank the boost up :D

bear in mind you will be putting more strain on the rest of the car then though, including the auto box

jaffa i have a 4" cat back and a 57i induction with a louved front panel

get that chip then :D

as james says, the main reason for a chip is to safely increase boost pressure.

you will need a decent aftermarket boost gauge, then by using boost jets or an electronic boost controller, raise your boost pressure to the desired level (around 1 bar max on stock tubs/injectors)

you should also think about uprated coolers for your auto box if not already fitted

Do the auto cooler upgrade first!!!! Otherwise you're looking at serious money for a gearbox recon! Thats if it isn't done already of course ;) Chris@getgreddy is in your area ;)

Don't bother with a JWT Chip they are crap....

Light the blue touch paper.......

When you're ready to go down the chip/boost controller route, contact John Dixon and then make some time to go down and see him in Kidderminster. Trust me on this one ;)

Leigh.

I would deffo 2nd that one, speak to John Dixon and get a chip that is best suited to your cars modifications dont bother with the general JWT Ca Ca.

dont bother with the general JWT Ca Ca.

Do you wanna expand on that. Appreciate JWT is a generic map and therefore may not extract the most optimum performance for a given car, as a custom map would. But isn't it a good compromise between performance and safety due to its rich fuelling characteristics and the amount of development that's gone in to it?

It is a good compromise due to the hazards involved when heavily modifying your car but I don't like Compromise I personally want Raw power and that may not suit everyone. I ran a genuine JWT (Not a Clone) for 1 year and was not very impressed with it at all, it didn't appear to be much more effective than running Stock. If you really wanna run a good ECU then buy a Mines ECU and a good boost gauge/ controllre or jets then you will know what a ZX is really capable of.

Also note that you can still run a Mines ECU SAFELY with stock Turbos and running at 13-14psi very safely with 1mm boost jets and still maintain safety boost if you get in trouble. You will also be able to absolutely Cain most cars that try to race you, I am running this set up on my 2nd ZX and I totally whooped a Ferarri 355 no probs at all. Nothing that anyone can say will convince me that a JWT Chip is any good, been there done that and they're Still CRAP...FACT.

Andy (Duff)! what is the auto cooler up grade all about - never heard of this

I think the first mod for any Zed owner is to subscribe to the forum :D

Jap import autoboxes suffer over here and many go tits up because they overheat. The stock cooler is built into the radiator and isnt up to scratch so first thing to do is get an external oil cooler. Chris @ Getgreddy in the traders section will do you a good deal, and I believe fitting is straightforward :)

Doesnt mean to say you can start ordering power mods as well hehe :D Just fit the cooler first ;)

I have a jap tt auto, i'm running a jwt chip & boost jets @ 12psi.

Not the highest of psi's, but a nice safe one! The chip changes

the characteristics of the car, making it easier to drive. Feels

completely different to drive, not necessarily faster, but smoother

all round.

Slim Smally...The autobox cooler is needed on jap autos as

the japs don't fit sufficient coolers for our driving conditions.

Chris@Greddy does 'em, check the traders forum.

*EDIT*.....Shrimpy beat me to it!

I would like to hear what John D has to say re the mines and JWT chip.

If the mines is better then fair enough but I would like to know exactly why it is apparently better.

Where is John when you need him . LOL

All MINES do is up the timing at certain load sites along with leaning out the fuel at others thus giving much more power , the downside is that you have to run optimax due to the fuel set up and 13.5 is about optimum for this chip as any higher boost seems to cause a really lean point between 2500 and 3500 on stock injectors(will need to find my dyno sheets to check)

JWT well thats just a nice safe bet to be able to up your boost a little nothing wrong with it (does exactly what it says on the tin)

Nice 1 Ryan .... That explains it better.

So who has a Mines chip I can try out then? :D

My car is off the road for another week or so borrow mine it's a manual too Ryan has the car at the mo speak to him and see what he says, trust me there is a Huuuuge difference between a Mines and a JWT, I know I have had both...

thanks for all the feedback guys, i now know that keeping the donkey cool before any performance mods makes complete sence----by the way this is my third zx but my first tt and its a totally different ride

Don't bother with a JWT Chip they are crap....

After my experience with my previous Z i would tend to agree, thank god i went to the Thor Dyno Day last winter, otherwise another fooked engine may have been the result, rich fuelling it was not :( very lean top end and it was sent back to JWT for mapping of 555s,Sport 500 tubs, no wonder the Z went through 3 engines in 2 years.

I am defo going to try a mines chip just to see the difference.

Should be interesting. My original chip wasn't stock and it was a jap one but it was really agressive so was removed.

So by the sounds of it what you guys are all saying is that you need something a little like this ;)

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=323871#post323871

has any 1 got a apexi power FC or greddy e manage ecu. can you tell me how good are there and what else i would need with them besides adding the gauges.

i thinking about upgrading my ECU. in the near future. wanted some opinons.

-T-

Fitted an emanage. You really need the full kit though including all harnesses and MAP sensor etc to get the full benefit from it - then you have full control over fueling and timing as well as the other parameters...
