From perusing the forum on a regular basis I gather that Shell Optimax is the preferred choice of fuel for a lot of ZX owners.

Has anyone tried using BP Ultimate???? Is it as good as, or better than, Optimax?? Or doesn't it really matter...........

According to BP's blurb it offers " sharper response, smoother acceleration, extra oomph. And it cleans your engine, giving out fewer emissions."

It's just like normal super unleaded and nobody seems very impressed with it.

Optimax is higher octane which is always good on turbo cars :D

Right guys you've convinced me. I'll still have to "endure" a 5 mile drive to m y nearest Shell garage instead of being a lazy TW4T and going to BP a mere 1 mile away!!

5 miles you lucky git my nearest is 15 miles away

Mines about 400 yards away  :D

I used to have one 400 yards away but it closed :(

Now I have to drive 1 mile LOL

I tried Ultimate once or twice and didn't get the marginal mpg increase that I get with Optimax, so never bothered again.

It only closed cus your car was off the road....

cheerz, mickey

Would have thought you alone Chris could have kept it open with the Z! LOL

It's like you said - off the road for so long they had to close.

I spent £650 on Optimax one month when I was using it for my business

My clients were paying my travel expenses so I didn't care.

Last weekend I put £45 in on saturday morning and had to put another £45 in on sunday morning. Put £20 in on sunday night!

£110 in a weekend and less than 200 miles

I can't afford that these days now it's out of my own pocket :nono:

That's why I've bought a Saxo diesel runabout :o

I was always using Optimax but stuck some Ultimate in as I was running too low to take a chance at reaching another station. The pick up from low revs was definitely much better and it felt pretty good, however higher up the revs the performance was shite and infact it was 'pinking' as it approached 7k rpm. Stuck some Optimax in at next refill and all back to normal.

Nelson should know more, but ultimate has a higher calorific value (more 'energy') rating than optimax...

sorry to go against the grain here

but i always used optimax

till I put BP Ultimate in because there was no Shell station near

IMHO it was alot better

shell garage is 10miles away from me and if im low id rather take a jerrycan 10miles than put any other fuel in and i drive the z no more than 50 miles per week :D

Funny that, but my Zed doesn't like it either. :nono:

I've a UK car with no mods, so normally use regular 95ron unleaded (either Shell or BP). I sometimes use Optimax - no noticable difference in performance but I do seem to get more mpg. In fact Shell fuel in general gives better mpg for me.

I used Ultimate a couple of times from different garages and my Zed seemed slower than with regular unleaded

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes and no, matey. Yes to Optimax ('cos its the only 98 octane plus almost every ZX seems to get better mileage and/or a gnat's better performance). No to all the others as they are only 97 octane at best. Except if you can't get Optimax, then super unleaded is better than just unleaded.

Cheers - Gio

ive been driving my z for 15ish months now and have never put anything other than unleaded in (prob due to the cost of optimax). i think i'll wait for my next pay day and put a tenner in and see what all the fuss is about.....

thanks for the advice, i am now an optimax man :)
