Has any of you creative modify chaps got any ideas about the black stuff they put over this chrome trim and what can be done to either get rid of it (without scratching it) or get it resealed? All the cars ive been looking at you are beginning to see the chrome underneath and it looks messy...

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Rob

They're very difficult to restore as they tend to corrode as well as peel/fade but if it's any help you can buy replacements and they're dead easy to fit!

Not quite sure how much mine were but I seem to recall they were about £15 or £20 (from the Z centre). They really make a difference !

Superb, so you just wrench out the old ones and the new ones drop in? Cheers mate i had a feeling they were going to be a problem, i didnt know you could replace them!

Are we talking about the small strips on the roof between the targas and windscreen? Mine are looking a little untidy - would be great to get 'em replaced...

There are some sliding clips underneath the trims (3 on each I think). You can shift them with a thin screwdriver. You may need some WD40 obviously as they probably haven't shifted in 10 years. When you get the new trims you'll see how the new clips work - dead easy mate !

The ones at the edge of the targas and the ones between the windscreen pillars and the windscreen. Don't know whether you can change the one between the roof and the windscreen. There are three strips each side (including one very short one that does the t-bar.

Mmmm.. Thanks Konrad - I'll have to take a look. Sounds about right though!

Yeah i think were talking about the same thing..i went to see some guys car the other week and he had stanley bladed the black off to leave the chrome, and guess what, it was scratched to b*ggery, i can imagine it does look good though if it was all chrome and lacquered up...

Yeah - just checked! The small piece is indeed at the rear of the roof, not the front...

Do what I did for less than a pound ... buy some black electical tape and carefully cover all the trim pieces. If you clean the bits properly before applying the tape they will last ages. Did mine when I bought the car three years ago as a temporary solution (Luke didn't sell these bits back then) and am only now needing to replace one or two small sections. :)

Cheers!

Danny

LOL - nice one Danny! Have just spoken to Luke and it's gonna cost about £100 for all six pieces (details here) Thing is, if you do one and not the others, it'll probably look at bit crap :(

Ah well - car's going into the bodyshop soon so it would be nice to get it sorted properly..

Yep, I'm a cheap skate too!!! I have done the electrical tape solution.

Works very well but I brought 2 widths, so there is no overlapping on the thicker sections and no cutting down on the thinner sections!!

I'm going to replace all of mine soon as it's been on 12 months, it's not peeled or anything but I just want to re-do it.

:D

Matty.

LOL - I'm being swayed back to the cheaper option guys! Did you need to remove the trim before you taped it up and did you need to prep it in any way?

LOL cheap skates

let me join in

not to be rude to luke, but cant Z breakers get hold of decent stuff...? I rang one and asked for a seat once and they said they could supply a couple for 100 quid? so surely the trims not that much?

btw, why has noone chatted about deblacking it and getting some of that lovely chrome out in the open? surely must be a way without messin it up?

Get the perfect width electrical tape and you're laughing! I have done the same and for a cheap solution it is pretty good. I even like the 'matt' kinda finish to it.

the problem's just that almost all zeds are 10 years or more old now, so most of the trims are faded and/or coroded already. They can almost certainly be restored, either to black or chrome, but it's quite a bit of work and I was just born lazy ! :D

Plus, having seen the difference some made to a zed I just couldn't resist - you wouldn't believe such a small item could make such a difference !

I know it is a bit cheeky but us Z owners are all skint at some point or another (and usually more of the time than not ;)). There is no need to remove the trim just make sure the trim is nice and clean. Like Matty I too bought two different widths and it works a treat. Good luck!

Amen to that ! :)

Get some halfords (no joke) black bumper spray, lightly rub down each one and obviously mask off any surrounding areas and just spray them.

Comes out perfect and will probably last ten more years if you put on enough paint, I did 4 coats and it looks cool.

Olly.

The Easy Way To Make Your Trims Look Good Is Scrape Of All That Orrible

Plasticy Coatingif Their Like Mine You Will Have A Few Edges To Start With!

Next Get Some Scotchbrite-[grey Fine] And Rub This All Over The Chrome

Until Completely Dull.then Use A Tin Of One Pack Etch Primer And Give Em All A Light Coat, this Bonds To The Surface, then Use A Tin Of Hycote Satin Black-again Light Coats Until Covered, and Voila Trims As Good As New!!

I use Armorall on mine and most other plasticy bits.

It amazes me how many ppl polish their cars, get them in showroom condition and leave the tyres looking grey/scuffed/patchy/blotchy/old! One minute spent on each tyre with Armorall and they look brand new - I dont mean sickly shiny like some showrooms do, just a deep black sheen. Ooops I've changed subject :-)

I used humbrol matt black modelling paint and touched in the areas where the surface had come away. Mine used to have black tape but I thought it looked a bit tacky close up. worked ok, but removing them and painting them would be the best bet . :)
