Is there anyone who can help me source some of the golden nectar. (No not Fosters :duffer: )

I've exhausted all the haunts around where I live without success. Even Halfords ordering in shed loads hasn't worked. Anyone have a mail-order source?

I don't mind buying in bulk (within reason)_

Simon.

Yeah - I asked Halfords for this and they said that they had never heard of it. Does anyone know what quantities it comes in?

For everyone midlands or further north, motormania stock it, £27.99 is full retail for it, you may also have to ask for it as it gets nicked if its put on a shelf!!!!

They didn't even have Dexron III last time I was in there, and nor indeed did they know what it was!

Zerve you right for not coming to my shop, ive got fookin tonnes of it!!!! :)

is castrol 10-60 the nuts? iv used halfords fully synthetic b4 and it seemed to work well, is this a crapy oil? it still cost +25, need a change soon so thought id check! and how often do you guys change it? :p

I change every 3000 miles, though i f*cked up once and did it at 3000km!!!

I think castrol 10/60 seems a bit on the thin side, but most people on here swear by it which is why i use it.

Plenty of it on my driveway too. :(

A bit on the thin side ? How heavy do you need ? The 10 part is the low temperature viscosity isn't it? I thought the second number (60 in this case) was more important.

Cheers

John

I still dont know the ins and outs of it all, and I sell the frickin stuff!! (wheres Nelson when you need him!!!) All i know is that when you shake a bottle of 10/60 its like a bottle of water, when you shake other oils they all seem thicker. Probably feck all to do with that but thats why i work in a car shop and im not a microbiologist!!!

Try shaking a bottle of piss thin Mobil 1 then.:D;)

I had Mobile 0-40 and that was like water. The RS 10-60 is a good oil. Its not "thick" but its not thin. The magical thing about it is it viscosity when its at high temperatures.

Last time I did an oil change I used Mobil 15/50, but it was expensive, about £35 for 4 litres.

Whats the forums opinion on Mobil 15/50 ?

John

Nothing wrong with Mobil 1 15/50.

goose fat is underrated !

Yeah I've got this in mine, seems fine to me :)

Well, it's a rating, innit, not a direct measurement...

So it will be "thick" round yer bearings in a thin film but "thin" when you shake a litre of it as one big lump (if you can have a lump of a liquid...) Kinda like the opposite of silly putty. I don't reckon you can shake it hard enough to get it to 4 bar!

Makes sense really, if it was thick enough to keep the tubby bearings floating ALL the time you'd never get the stuff through the pump!

This might seem like magic, but if it was simple we'd just put the stuff you get out of the ground straight in the sump, instead of using f-synth...

...and any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic!

the higher the numbers, the thicker the oil and vice-versa

first numer is low temp viscosity and last number is viscosity at running temps.

better oils tend to be thinner for fuel economy, but may not suit older engines,

Thankyou Nelson, i think im getting it now.

So I am i right in thinking that the 10/60 oil will be thinner a start up than the 15/50 and will also maintain a thicker viscosity at high temperatures when the other oil has thinned out?

If thats right that will explain why the castrol RS 10/60 is the nuts!!

Corrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-ect!

correct - the 60 (high) viscosity is better for high performance engines as the oil usually gets hotter (and thinner) - too thin is bad (metal to metal contact possible)
