I have just recently had a problem with missfiring and it's been intermittant and now it's all the time. I have cleaned out all the electric connectors for the coil packs and injectors and it seems to only be running on 4 cylinders if that. Couldn't hardly pull away from a diesel Xantia the other day. Seems very reluctant to accelerate at all now :(

Have currently got the battery dissconnected to re-set the ecu. How do I do a diagnostic whilst I'm at it? Vould it be the PTU (series one). The guy who had it before me put a second hand one on in september 2002 so dont know if this is the problem

I do need to cleand the throttles out as they haven't been done for about a year but do you think this will cause such a massive problem?

Please help guy's

Try cleaning the CAS connector as well, but it sounds like the PTU.

Hello Ivan,

Incase you need one, I can get hold of a second hand series 2 PTU with adapter cables but no bracket for £110 plus delivery.

I think it's on the Aus site, but if I remember rightly it's a 50/50 chance of repair.

Ah right. Well money's tight at the mo' and my dad's an ekectrician so I'll try to find it. Cheers for that mate. I'll let you know if I want one tho'

Ivan

I'd suggest you borrow a known working one first and try that to be sure

sounds like the PTU , the other option is it could be the mass air flow sensor

if you have an induction kit fitted and the sensor has got wet it will cause the same problems , if the PTU goes its usually sudden and an engine stopper , the MAF will cause bad fuelling and missfires loss of power etc etc

check the MAF isnt wet or contaminated its an easy check to do

i repaired mine - ordered a new one from courtesy anyway but it seemed to be fine :)

have you done an ECU diag to see if you get any codes??

Cheers boys. I've found the problem now but just got to find the cure.

The drivers side rear coil pack connector isn't doing anything. I disconnected it yesterday whilst the engine was running and it didn't make a difference (usually revs drop etc.) so thats the problem.

Now the question is whats the cure? PTU? MAF? Checked it for corrosion - none. I just need the cure now please.

Ivan

I think the first thing to do is swap the coilpack over with a good one to see if it's that.

Doesn't mean it's the coil pack mate. Just means it's something on that cylinder. For example, if the injector wasn't firing for some reason, connecting/disconnecting the coil pack wouldn't change a thing.

Swap the coil pack with one from another cylinder and see if the problem stays with the coil or stays with the cylinder.

have you checked the coilpack? Do you have a spark?

Vijay

Good question. How do I tell this? Does it still sound like the PTU? or not now?

Get a metal bar. Put one end to your ear and the other against the injector. You should hear it ticking. Try each one to compare the difference.

Vijay - no not tried that yet. Aare they a PITA to remove? And do I just plug the cap back on and fire the engine up?

Mike - Yeah will try this - although in my garage the exhaust is v.loud!

Only had a quick look this morning for 2 mins to discover the coil pack connector thing. Was going to do further investigation to night but laid on the sofa to watch tv whilst my dad was on the computer and woke up at 9:30 :xxx: Far too tired to do it now. I'll try these tomorrow night.

2 bolts and the coil pack will pull out.

You can also use a screwdriver to do what Mike said :)
