When i turn the key to start my car, it makes the most hidious scraping noise and the car fails to turn over. Then i try again and it scrapes a bit then turns over fine

Is this a starter motor on the way out??

If it isnt then what the hell is it? Its waking the dead at 6am when i go to work

Thanks for any help -

Hey mike,

no expert but yeah i think its the pinion thing in the starter motor sticking.

Is it auto? but even if it is not it sounds like the ring gear. This is the teeth the starter engages to turn the engine over. Or the teeth on the starter itself, but I feel ring gear.

If I am right they can be replaced on the flywheel, manual, or a new drive plate for autos. IMHO of cours.

its a manual ! My mate (who knows a bit about motors) said it was the same thing as TrevZ just said but i wanted to make sure!

How can i check which is the problem? Do i have to get a new starter and see if that works?

Ok then. Ill see if andy z has one going ! Thanks very much for all your help guys

i Had the same trouble, my ring gear was worn but not terrible, i got quoted £90 for a new 1, the starter motor collected all the dust from the clutch which i think caused the bendix to stick slightly.

u can try taking the starter motor off clean the dust out of the bendix gear and make sure it has full movement! DUST MAY CONTAIN ASSPESTOS.

i Just used a cleaning agent washed the gear section only then made sure it was dried out before replacing.

u can then check the ring gear through the starter motor mounting hole for wear, revolving the engine using a socket on the crank pully nut.

hope this may help mate

Thanks mate, im gonna have a look at cleaning it at the weekend, and see what happens!

:hyper:

also check that the starter motor housing hasn't broke. Mine did on one of the mounting brackets (the bolt screw had threaded) so some of the time the starter motor would not be fully engaged.

Had exactly the same problem mate. It degrades the longer you leave it. You sound like a tw@t trying over and over to get it to bite on the teeth. Get a second hand starter and your problem's cured.

Im on Andy Z's case as we speak!

That's exactly what I did! Had a starter and an alternator off Andy and they've both been spot on.

Exactly what mine did, planet gears had gone inside so it wouldn't engage correctly.

Got a recon model fitted and it starts quicker than ever,

Well I know a guy that had this problem, next thing he needs a new flywheel as some of the teeth were missing:( 95 car too.

could be either. the starter has a drive inside which makes the same noise as when its chewing teeth off of your flywheel :(

id remove the starter & inspect the ring gear first, if all's ok then replace your starter.

mine done the same & it turned out to be the starter, but id check 1st cos sods law says if you buy a starter it'll be your ring gear!

Now when i start it, it makes a quick scrapping noise then like a strange ' fan type rotating noise'?!?! If i quickly turn the key to on then off you hear this fan type (not the fan in the car) noise spinning up then slowing down again!!! And its becoming a git to start now. Tried to get it off at the weekend but being clueless i cant see where it is at all (even with the instructions from the online manual)

You really should get this to a garage, as paul says, you are risking damaging your flywheel. Its a fiddly job but should only take a garage 30 minutes to get it off and 30 minutes to get it back on.
