My hydraulic lifters have always been a bit rattly, but have become excessively noisy lately and don't quieten down at all now on the way to work which is a 15 minute drive through town. They only go quiet after about 20mins of motorway driving.

It really does sound like a transit van now on startup - has anyone ever had these replaced?

Got an idea of cost?

Very hard to live with this noise for much longer - I was thining about an engine oil flush to try to unstick sticky ones, but as car has done 109K I'm worried it will do more harm than good.

Cheers

Alex.

Some people swear by a bir of ATF in the oil to clean the crap out of it - but be prepared to dump the oil and filter pronto if you do it. It can cause leaks by cleaning the engine too well though.....

Somebody on here has removed them cleaned them and put them back

and I remember it was a sucess - its a lot of work though.

Or you could get new ones from courtesyparts.com - not that expensive.

Try a search or ask who did it as a thread title.

Worth a try.

Just done mine. I have found that the right exhaust bank suffers the most poss due to heat. After rebuilding several Z heads, I have noticed that the bank in question suffers from a high build up of varnish and can be cleaned of with either spirits/petrol or if there really bad you can use very fine emmery cloth. Once you done it make sure you flush the followers out with clean petrol/sprits to clear out the oil ways. Make sure that the followers are returned to the holes they came out off (important) The cam lobes are match (worn) to the exact same pattern as the followers. Get these mixed up and you will know what noise really is..

Hope this helps...

Just bought recently from Courtesy-$260 (£141)+import tax,vat.

Was that all 48? What was the total bill?

NoS & JD'S-Z - how long did the job take you. I need my car for work so could only do it over a weekend out on the street! (no garage facility).

May see what Grasshopper in Wigan quote to replace them all.

took me 4 days on me own, is a fairly big job!

took me engine out to do it. With engine in you have to remove the cam belt, plenum, rockers covers, 4 x cam sprockets and the cams. To do the job you will need new cam end seals and poss some pcv pipes which normaly break when removing the plenum. Two of the cam sprockets have a small cover plate with a spring behind held in by four small screws. behind this plate is a 19mm bolt which is sooooo tight I snaped a socket plus extension bar trying to remove it. In the end I bought an electric tourqe 1/2"" drive. This made the job a lot easier. The job is a horrible job to undergo, If you need to use your car from day to day. Iam afraid you will have to put up with the noise mate. 4 days is good going with the right tools. If I were you I would book it into GPS or someone nearby and let them take the pain. I very much doubt that GPS will rebuild each lifter to time consuming. They will insist on replacing them outright. If you attempt the job yourself instead of stripping the lifters, simply clean and soak them in petrol and blast through the oil wells with a high pressure air line. I would then recommend soaking them in clean oil for a couple of hours before refitting.

Excuse the spelling...not my strong point

hope this helps
