ive mistakenly topped up my radiator coolant with mobil coolant which was a pink colour, only to find that the colour of the coolant already in the car was blue/green, someone i know said there are 2 types of coolant and shouldnt really be mixed

everything seems ok except when i accellerate, the temp gauge goes down, anyone else had similar probs/symptoms?? how urgently do i need to bleed and refil and what colour coolant should i be putting in it

cheers

I dont think the colour or make makes any difference mate?

It sounds like your thermostat might be stuck open tho.

would that not cause it to run cold all the time though?? this only happens if i put my foot down, then it goes back to normal temp!! only started doing this since i filled it up with the different coolant

Hi

If you've just topped up the coolant with a smallish amount it shouldn't make a difference except to the colour in the rad after a few miles ;)

I've heard they are different according to colour but they still both do the same job. If you've not had the coolant changed for a while I'd drain, flush and refill it anyway. I believe it should be done every 2 years.

Just to get the mixture right, I was lazy and bought the Nissan ready mixed stuff (which is green ;) )

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

when you put your foot down the water pump is working faster and theres more cold air going thru the rad form the speed, so the engine over cools if thermostat doesnt close.

when you slow down or stop in traffic the pumps going slower and theres not so much air thru rad so temp goes back up.

I think its just coincidence that its started since you added the pink stuff.

Does it drop by a lot and does it fluctuate at all. If so, it sounds like the first signs of a temperature sensor about to break off. You may have caught it when under the bonnet. Don't worry if it's that, they're not too expensive. They start to read funny when under lateral loads from acceleration or braking.

Moving temp sensor sounds like a bad earth some where on the temp sensors.

hi guys

there are 2 types of anti-freeze;

blue/green is G11 which is used for all cars up to about1995/1997,

pink is G12 which is used for newer cars

the difference is the blend and anti-corrosive properties!

they state these shouldnt be mixed but if only small quantity its not a prob!! hope that helps!

The reason your temp guage is moving down when you accellerate is because the connector is lose. Have a look at the black temp connector (next to the yellow one on the top coolant pipe) and see if you can fix it more securely onto the pin. This should stop it from moving. What is happening is when you accellerate the main fan spins faster, causing more air to move in the engine bay which in turn pushes the black connector around. If it isn't sitting properly then contact is lost and the guage moves. If you remove the black connector the temp guage shouldn't work at all - get the idea? This is exactly what happened to my car and it was the cheapest fix I've applied ;).

Cheers mate!

Well that makes a lot more sense than my lateral loads theory! Sounds definately like the connector though.

Thanks all, Danny think you were right mate cheers, made sense and its not doing it anymore, typical z owner paranoia there, worry about major problems when its something so simple cheers
