I've managed to use my trolley jack to raise my Zed onto axle stands. However, when I got under there I realised I had not used the correct lifting point (despite using the online manual :rolleyes: )

 

The section I have used was not badly damaged but there are a few pressure marks and indentations :( (see attached pic).

 

Can anyone tell me what I've damaged and if there are any possible implications?

Oh dear Steve,

it looks like youve jacked it on the engine oil sump from that pic.

Poss get a second hand sump?

not sure how low the oil pickup sits from the oil pump on a zed, but if the sumps now crushed into it you risk engine damage from oil starvation, so best to get it sorted sooner rather than later!

I'm about to fit an oil pressure sender above the oil filter (one of the reasons for jacking the car in the first place!) - would this immediately identify a problem caused by sump damage?

yea, if youve got very low oil pressure then dont use it!!

doesnt look too bad actually from the picture, but better be safe than sorry

If you need to change the sump it's an engine out job (presuming it's a turbo model). There's no way you can get it off from underneath. Believe me... I've tried!

 

It's difficult to tell from that picture though mate. Can you get a brighter one so I can compare it to mine. Mine's off and in the garage so I can put the oil pick up back in and see where it fits in relation to any damage you may have.

Also very important: check the oilpan for dents before installation !

It very often happens that the oilpan gets dented (when the engine sits on the floor or during removal), which often causes oilpump pickup problems and this leads to low or NO oilpressure.

If you do have to remove the oilpan for gasket replacement or dent removal, also clean the oilpump pickup filter/mesh.

How did you get the sump bolts out with the rear gusset in the way?

well mines an auto, so i dont know if that helps, but i had to make a 'tool' for it as a normal spaner would not fit. What i did was grind a old cheep spaner down a bit so that it fits in between! works for me, done it twice now!

I presume you ground a spanner down to squeeze in between the gusset and the oil filter bracket. I thought about this after buying three different ones to see if I could get one to fit. But I eventually came to the conclusion that even if I could get a spanner up there, the bolt would be too long to come out. I now presume I was wrong!

i think i did'nt remove the bolt all the way, just enough to get to the other bits (i think we're talking about the same bolts)

 

I'll try and get some pics if you want?

sorry mate but that's bad news, there is a valve which sites inside the sump, if it's dented then that means the valve is pushed up even further thus reducing the gap that the oil can get through.

Hi

If the sump has been dented & pushed up, which it looks like from the pics best not drive car and change sump.

You can definately take sump off without taking engine out.

When my engine developed a problem (big end knock) the chaps at the garage dropped the sump! Saw it with my own two eyes.

I cant see any dents in the sump - it looks more scratched than anything else.
